Why I called Jonathan Nebuchadnezzar; the full details__Soyinka

I shall not insist that the historic/biblical figure of Nebuchadnezzar
is uniquely apt for the pivotal figure of the ‘democratic’ history in
the making at this moment — for one thing, Nebu was a nation builder and
 a warrior.<br />
<br />
One could argue, even more convincingly for the figure of Balthazar, his
 successor, or indeed, Emperor Nero as reference point — you all
remember him — the emperor who took to fiddling while Rome was burning.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
However, you should easily recall why I opted for King Nebu — the figure
 that currently sits on the top of our political pile himself evoked it,
 albeit in a context that virtuously disclaimed any similarities, even
tendencies. Perhaps, he meant it at the time when he claimed: ‘I am no
Nebuchadnezzar’. Perhaps, not! </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
One judges leaders on acts however, not pronouncements, which are often
as reliable as electoral promises. King Nebu remains relevant — and not
only for leadership. We, the citizens, are beginning to feel the heat...</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6589160015449763735" name="more"></a><br />
Without any claims to prophecy — unlike Shadrach and company, we wake up
 each morning to a sensation that we have been cast in the furnace
together with those who at least committed the crime of dissent or
criticism. No divine miracle appears to be at hand for a last-minute
rescue.<br />
<br />
In desperation, one is reduced to hoping that the evocation of his own
biblical reference point will resonate somewhere in the mind of one who
is so ostentatiously humble and pious, kneels at the feet of a priest
who could easily be mistaken for an office worker, and cultivates the
high and holy company of acknowledged spokesmen of God.<br />
<br />
So, here goes. Gentlemen of the Press, let’s not beat around the bush:
the line has been drawn. The people must decide — whether to submit or
resist. We may be no-count plebians in the sight of the new-born
patricians of Aso Rock and their apologists but — must we revert to the
Abacharian status of glorified slaves? Of course, it is up to any people
 to decide.<br />
<br />
The praetorian guards have been let loose — to teach the rabble their
place. The recent choice of a new leader for the Guard was clearly no
accident, and this hitherto unknown enforcer, one Suleiman Abba, has
wasted no time in inaugurating a season of brutish power.<br />
<br />
When a people’s elected emissaries are disenfranchised, cast out like
vagrants and resort to scaling fences to engage in their designated
functions, the people get the message. However, the choice is always
there, and each choice comes at a cost. It is either we pay now, or pay
later.<br />
<br />
The latest action of the supposed guardians of the law against the
nation’s lawgivers is an unambiguous declaration of war against the
people. I am glad that a commentator has referred to it as an attempted
coup-de-tat. And it nearly worked.<br />
<br />
Legislators are not elected for their athletic prowess, and such
endeavours should not be demanded of them. There are even presidents and
 prime ministers who were elected despite physical handicaps. The brain
is where it matters, the vision and commitment to service. Our
legislators however have been made to perform over and beyond the call
of the Olympics.<br />
<br />
I don’t understand why some media have described their action as a show
of shame — this is a very careless, easily misapplied designation. The
act of scaling gates and walls to fulfill their duty by the people must
be set down as their finest hour. They must be applauded, not derided.<br />
<br />
If shame belongs anywhere, it belongs to the Inspector-General of Police
 and his slavish adherence to conspiratorial, illegal, and
unconstitutional instructions — to undermine a democratic structure, and
 one — to make matters worse — convoked in response to an emergency of
dire public concern.<br />
<br />
What sticks to this policeman is worse than shame; it is infamy. Such a
public servant deserves to be publicly pilloried, tried and meted a
punishment that is appropriate to treasonable acts, if only to serve as a
 deterrent to others in positions of responsibility under the law. To
demand less is to reduce ourselves below the status free citizens of a
free nation.<br />
<br />
It means we endorse violence against our representatives, that we are
content to submit ourselves to the jackboots of naked force. It is to
annunciate the era of the brute, as the current fundamental modality of
governance.<br />
<br />
For this latest outrage, one in an escalating series of impunity, the
buck stops yet again at the presidency, and that incumbent, Goodluck
Ebele Jonathan, continues to surprise us in ways that very few could
have conjectured.<br />
<br />
Peaking at his own personalised example where he set the law of simple
arithmetic on its head — I refer to the split in the Governors’ Forum,
and his ‘formal’ recognition of the minority will in a straightforward,
peer election — democracy has been rendered meaningless where it should
be most fervently exemplified.<br />
<br />
Nothing is more unworthy of leadership than to degrade a system by which
 one attains fulfillment, and this is what the nation has witnessed time
 and time again in various parts of the nation, the recent affront
against the legislative chamber being only the most blatant and
unconscionable.<br />
<br />
We know, of course, that this is not the first of its kind in the
nation’s history, but precedents are not binding. Each leader selects
his or her own model for emulation or avoidance, and that choice is
certain indication of the true nature of such a leader, and a clue to
the kind of conduct that a people can expect of him.<br />
<br />
It is a warning. His choices for the occupancy of crucial public
positions — such as the protective arm of the nation — constitutes an
even more immediate and constant public alert. The signals are ominous —
 for and beyond 2015.<br />
<br />
These, to state the obvious, are not ordinary times. The menace of Boko
Haram hangs over the corporate entity called a nation and over every
individual, citizen or mere bird of passage.<br />
<br />
The cliché ‘heating up the polity’ may grate the eardrums with its
banality but I think that we have a right to demand of a leader not to
stoke up the furnace in which events have cast its citizens.<br />
<br />
Every day records a new violation of our humanity. The atrocious
targeting of the great mosque of Kano has rendered any lingering doubt
of impending national imposition an invitation for collective suicide,
preferably through piecemeal dismemberment.<br />
<br />
The theories of cause and effect can wait, or continue — it does not
matter — the omniscient in such matters continue to pontificate, some of
 them blithely forgetting that they indeed contributed to policies that
landed us in this brutal cleft.<br />
<br />
What does matter is an awareness that the nation is only part of a
global eruption of fundamentalist delusions whose staple diet consists
of destabilisation and dehumanisation — all summed up as an ideology of
Hate for the different. For the defiant.<br />
<br />
This should form the basis of understanding by which an implacable enemy
 is confronted. And it should form the basis of leadership awareness. It
 should have led, by now, to national mobilisation on an unprecedented
scale, one that may even impinge, however temporarily, on those
liberties that you and I consider non-negotiable in our rights as
citizens.<br />
<br />
However, imagine, just imagine that today’s leadership were of such a
cast of mind, one that makes demands of sacrifice from the citizens. The
 response would be outright rejection. And deservedly so, because any
such motion would be distrusted. It would be seen as an act of
insincerity, an opportunity to acquire even more powers for citizen
enslavement.<br />
<br />
This is the price you pay for encroaching on the precincts and
entitlements of others with whom you share a structure of authority. You
 lose the trust of the other legs of — in this case — a governance
tripod.<br />
<br />
Every act, especially in abnormal circumstances, would be viewed with
extreme suspicion, and the gates open wide, without any strenuous effort
 on its part, to the triumphal progression of the enemy. That is the
collateral damage that the abuse of power attracts to whatever should be
 a collaborative undertaking.<br />
<br />
Where governance has degenerated to such a level that any individual, on
 account of his uniform, can stop an elected representative of a people,
 in this case a governor, from going about his legitimate duties or
exercising his basic, elementary right as a citizen — as happened during
 the recent Ekiti elections — we do not need to guess what happens in a
situation that calls for general mobilisation, on which, needless to
say, the good will and trust of all arms of governance depend in a
crisis. This, of course, requires the capacity for forward-thinking.<br />
<br />
The shambles that punctuated a presidential campaign visit at the
Obafemi Awolowo University a few days ago merely underline the total
alienation of President Jonathan from the reality that has engulfed the
nation.<br />
<br />
Yes, political campaigns are part and parcel of the bloodline of the
democratic process. We know that they never stop. However, that a
national leader should go campaigning on the platform of ethnic support
at a time when priorities dictate a united national engagement for
survival, is a grotesque undertaking that was tragically rebuked in the
massacre of worshippers and desecration of the Kano mosques, almost
simultaneously with the alienated gathering of selected crowned heads
and journeymen at the OAU campus, a macabre echo of Balthazar’s feast.<br />
<br />
Long before Nyanya, long before Chibok, long before the mildest of the
now innumerable violations of our basic right to exist as free citizens,
 the march of a nation towards implosion has dominated the landscape,
but an obsession with the pettiness of power has obscured remedial
vision and thus, the creative options constantly open to any prescient
leadership.<br />
<br />
If Somalia was too far away as instruction, then surely Mali remains
sufficiently close warning. With the invasion of Mali by al Qaeda and
its clones and surrogates, we moved from mere portents, from mere
distant rumblings, to the wake-up knock right against our gates — and
yet leadership slumber remained unbroken.<br />
<br />
Mali was retrieved, a breathing space created, but it would appear that
this was when complacency took over and snoring attained its highest
pitch. The few waking moments have been spent on sterile, tawdry
intrigues and consolidation on the marshes and quicksands of power. That
 failure in the aggressive destabilisation of the enemy is the cross
that the nation bears today — but we must concede that this gross
dereliction applies not only to Nigeria but to her neighbours — indeed
to ECOWAS — and the collective failure for concerted action.<br />
<br />
Leadership counts however, and it was Nigeria that took the lead in that
 critical and timely mission that was spearheaded by France.<br />
<br />
The lesson of Mali was completely lost on complacent leadership however,
 leaving time and space for alien invaders to make common cause with the
 internal, unleashing destruction at will and dancing around a nation
whose armed forces have acquitted themselves creditably on foreign
missions.<br />
<br />
The architect of that initial policy of containment was the recently
deceased Gbenga Ashiru, then Foreign Minister, unceremoniously removed
for the ends of premature politicking, before the logical development of
 that initiative.<br />
<br />
Now, of course, the very manipulators of Ashiru’s removal are falling
over one another to heap praises on the quality of his achievements in
office, skirting — who can blame them! — the tawdry reasons for his
removal from office. Petty, retaliatory calculations that placed the
interests of the nation, the very security of its people in acute
jeopardy from unfinished business. Ashiru’s presence in that position
had become a fly in the palm wine of Balthasar’s Feast.<br />
<br />
Caution: no one dares predict that the plight of Nigerians would be any
rosier had his ideas been pursued till the very end. The point is simply
 this — a process was interrupted, truncated without thought, petty
politicking being made to override substance. I wrote Ashiru to
commiserate with him and to bolster his morale. He replied in only two
words: USE AND DUMP!<br />
<br />
Defend yourselves! This is what the perceptive have preached and groups
like the so-called Junior Task Force translated into action, the real
heroes of the defence of the tattered ‘Nigerian sovereignty’.<br />
<br />
Among them, a hitherto unknown, a woman, has become one of the symbols
of resistance, an ordinary woman turned extraordinary, one of the
hunters who routed the diabolical hordes who appear to rout our military
 even before their appearance.<br />
<br />
Does it sound today as whimsical as it may have sounded to some when I
urged the organisation of willing survivors of Boko Haram into local
defence corps, their women especially, proposed that they be kitted out
fully, and formally inducted as auxiliaries.<br />
<br />
Ladi, it would appear, needed no such urging from any direction. It was
obvious to her, and others like her that it was futile to await
salvation from a centre that is so self-obsessed with power that it no
longer sees even the danger to its very existence.<br />
<br />
A people must defend itself. These are no ordinary times, and we have
moved beyond orthodox solutions. “Where two or three are gathered
together…” — I shall complete those words my own way: “They must
anticipate, organise, obtaining or improvising the wherewithal as
circumstances dictate. Fascism is the eternal enemy of freedom, and it
comes both in internal and external forms.”<br />
<br />
Today, it would be premature to claim that Suleiman Abba and the many
incarnations of Shekau are cut from the same mould but remember, we have
 been here before. Who can forget Sunday Adewusi, the original Robo-Cop!<br />
<br />
And so, consider this; the ripples from the fascistic eruption of a
Suleiman Abba may actually result in far greater casualties and inhuman
degradation of society than those so far recorded even at the hands of
Shekau and his cohorts. That is the real and present danger.<br />
<br />
This is why the call for vigilance is real and urgent, and a need to
clip the wings of a predatory bird before it devours society, becomes
paramount.<br />
<br />
Beset by external and internal threats to liberty and dignity, abandoned
 internally by a do-it-yourself government on the one hand, and
externally by (claimed) impediments from cynical allies — as we are made
 to believe in the media — let no one cry Anarchy when the people
respond to that historic cry of liberation, to which one leader after
another — the most recent being the Emir of Kano and the Ulama leader,
Yahaha Jingir — have felt moved to urge upon their people: “Citizens,
Defend yourselves!”<br />

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has challenged the DSS to
immediately tell Nigerians the outcome of its investigations into the
cooked-up allegation of PVC cloning that forced the security agency to
unlawfully invade the party’s offices in Lagos over a week ago.<br />
<br />
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity
Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said if no evidence of PVC
cloning was found, the DSS should apologize to Nigerians for acting on
the basis of faulty intelligence.<br />
<br />
It said any further delay in telling Nigerians the outcome of the
investigations, after almost 10 days, could mean that the DSS is trying
to manufacture evidence to support its faulty intelligence.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Without carrying out any investigation and with no shred of evidence,
the DSS gleefully announced to the world that they stormed our data
centre because they got information that Permanent Voters Cards were
being cloned there. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"<span style="color: #cc0000;">On the basis of this uncorroborated announcement, the PDP categorically accused the APC of cloning PVCs</span>.
 It is now over a week since the DSS carted away materials and computer
servers after ransacking our offices for over two hours. The agency’s
experts must have analyzed the information in the materials and on the
servers...</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6589160015449763735" name="more"></a><br />
"Therefore, we are now asking them to immediately announce their
findings to the world. After all, it took them only a few hours after
their Gestapo-like invasion of our offices before they issued their
baseless allegation of PVC cloning to justify their action,” APC said.<br />
<br />
The party said while it has gone to court to seek redress, the DSS still
 owes Nigerians an explanation and, if indeed no evidence of card
cloning was found, an unreserved apology to them (Nigerians).<br />
<br />
It advised the DSS to always endeavour to act professionally and fairly
in carrying out its duties, rather than taking beer parlour gossips as
useful intelligence, adding: ”It is this type of faulty intelligence
that has been stifling the efforts to desconstruct Boko Haram and
faclitate the battle to end the insurgency that is daily killing and
maiming innocent Nigerians.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has been ruled out as a
running mate to whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the All
 Progressives Congress at the convention in December.<br />
<br />
A highly placed source in the party, who spoke with Punch on the matter,
 said that Fashola’s religion, even though he is considered a performer,
 had ruled him out of the race for the vice presidential slot.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
He said, “You know that the South-West is a base for the APC and it also
 contributed immensely to its formation. We would have preferred Fashola
 because of his pedigree in the state. Moreover, of all the APC
governors from the zone, he is the only one doing his second term. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“But this issue of religion is the problem. Apart from this, other APC
governors from the zone are also Muslims. You may need to recall that
the enemies of our party tried in vain before to label the party a
Muslim party. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Even though they have failed, we may also need to be guided by the
words of advice from former President Olusegun Obasanjo against any
party fielding same religion ticket. This is what is hampering us
concerning Fashola, whose performance and competence cannot be queried.”</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6589160015449763735" name="more"></a><br />
He said since it was almost certain that the party would field a Muslim
as its presidential candidate, it would therefore be out of place to
field another Muslim [Babatunde Fashola] as the running mate.<br />
<br />
Apart from General Muhammadu Buhari, the party also has three other
known presidential aspirants. They are a former VP Alhaji Atiku
Abubakar; Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwakwanso; and a newspaper
publisher, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah.<br />
<br />
Out of them, only Nda-Isaiah is a Christian.<br />
<br />
The source said that though Fashola remained the best candidate for the
position, he however regretted that the issue of religion would deny the
 party and the country the chance of fielding the governor.<br />
<div>
</div>
“South-West are not religious but we are dealing with a larger society now. So, we must be careful.”</div>

While many go to church on Sunday for worship, Kelechi Ikechi go about
robbing on same day. How sad! The 24-year-old indigene of Abia State,
who was arrested for burglary, has confessed that he steals only on
Sundays by breaking into his neighbours’ homes after they had gone to
their various churches.<br />
<div>
<br />
Kelechi was arrested on Sunday after he broke into another neighbour’s
flat to steal in the Ejigbo area. He was said to have confessed to
police that he broke into Peter Ibeh’s house at Afolabi Obe Street.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Unfortunately for him, while carrying out the act, a trap was set for
him and he was locked from outside and eventually caught in the act.</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><br />
In his confession, Ikechi said he resorted to stealing from his
neighbours after he lost his factory job. He said he chose Sundays to
steal because it was convenient and that his neighbours spend much time
at their various church services.<br />
<br />
On his part, the complainant, Peter Ibeh, said his house was burgled
every Sunday when he and members of his family are in church. He said
this caused serious rift within the family members and he decided to
find the root cause.</div>
<div>
<br />
Ibeh said on the day Ikechi was caught, he hid one of his aides inside
their flat and went to church with other members of the family.<br />
<br />
He said it paid off when Ikechi broke in and his aide locked him from
outside and raised the alarm which attracted other neigbours and he was
promptly arrested and handed over to Police at Ejigbo.<br />
<br />
After investigation, the jobless Ikechi was charged before Isolo Magistrates’ court for burglary.<br />
<br />
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and the court granted him bail in
the sum of N100,000. But he has been remanded in prison custody pending
when he will fulfill his bail condition.<br />
<br />
According to PM News, his trial will commence on December 1, 2014.</div>

</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
                The All Progressives Congress leaders have been meeting to avert likely
crisis that may trail its presidential primary scheduled to hold in a
few weeks from now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

Saturday <a href="http://www.punchng.com/news/2015-presidential-ticket-apc-in-dilemma-over-buhari-atiku/">PUNCH</a>
 authoritatively learnt in Abuja on Thursday that the leaders had begun
discussions with aspirants on the need to make the forthcoming primary
less acrimonious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6589160015449763735" name="more"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As part of the moves to ensure peace in the party, the leadership is said to be pursuing the option of a consensus candidate.</div>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6747821070134156749" name="more"></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The race for the ticket appears to be keenest between the former Head of
 State, Maj.-Gen.Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and former Vice-President
Atiku Abubakar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
But analysts believe that the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Kwakwanso’s interest in the party ticket cannot be ignored.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It was gathered that the APC National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, and
national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had separately held at least two
informal meetings with Buhari and Atiku.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It was also learnt that the two leaders had made personal appeals to the
 presidential aspirants to consider “the greater good” of the party.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
However, none of the two aspirants has shown readiness to back out of the move to get the party’s presidential ticket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The two leading aspirants had used recent party events to reach out to party loyalists and the would- be-delegates.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The latest being the APC recent mobilisation efforts in Sokoto and Lokoja where the party received some defectors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
But a chieftain of the APC in the South-East, Mr. Osita Okechukwu,
confirmed that the party was aware that there would be challenges from
the early stage, especially in the build-up to the primary, adding that
the party had been holding meetings over the issue.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
He said, “Many aspirants have expressed interest in the APC presidential
 ticket and all of them are qualified, so the party is considering
whether to go for direct or indirect primary. But some of us are of the
opinion that consensus may be better.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
“But the likely challenge is that the person with a fat pocket may win
the primary, considering the fact that he can just sit somewhere and
control the situation of things.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, expressed
anger on insinuation of a likely difficulty in resolving the issue of
three strong candidates seeking the party’s presidential ticket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
He said, “The primary is yet to hold. We should leave them till when the
 time comes. As long as the process is transparent, the party will
resolve the matter.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Meanwhile, plans are underway by the Northern Elders Forum to set up a
committee that will harmonise the positions of northern leaders ahead of
 the 2015 presidential poll.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Saturday PUNCH gathered that since the Peoples Democratic Party endorsed
 President Goodluck Jonthan as its sole candidate, prominent northern
groups, especially the NEF, had stepped up efforts to ensure that a
northerner wins the presidential poll.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Investigations showed that the proposal to set up a committee of eminent
 persons was taken so that they could work behind the scene to find a
common ground on the 2015 Presidency.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It was gathered that the elders were disturbed that northern leaders
were sharply divided over the issue of presidential aspirants.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It was learnt that the NEF was reaching out to other groups, including
the Arewa Consultative Forum, to sort out the differences among northern
 leaders on the issue.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For example, a prominent member of the ACF, Alhaji Lawal Kaita, is a known supporter of Atiku.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
A former Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Commasie, who is the ACF chairman, is known to have a soft spot for Buhari.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
A source, who confided in one of our correspondents, said, “We will soon
 set up a committee to sort out all these issues; our collective
interest is uppermost.”</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
When contacted, the spokesman for the NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi,
declined to confirm the group’s plan on the committee, saying the elders
 would not reveal their strategies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
He, however, said that the PDP governors in the North could not save
Jonathan from being defeated in the February 14, 2015 election.</div>

It was broadcast on a news programme in Kenya, and appears to show
Anglican pastor Charles Githinji half dressed in a hotel room with a
pretty young woman. Another man, claiming to be the woman's husband,
bursts into the room with a television crew in tow. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The sheepish
 pastor scrambles for his clothes, but not before being quizzed by the
people behind the camera. Kenyans began tweeting about the story using
the hashtag#PantsDown. The phrase has appeared more than 2,500 times in
the last few days, though not every instance was related to the pastor's
 story.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It was not
an isolated incident. Similar videos on YouTube - all of which appear to
 expose Kenyan pastors in similar situations - have racked up hundreds
of thousands of views.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In
Githinji's case, some are convinced that a team of people colluded in an
 attempt to entrap the pastor, and make money from the footage. "It was
stage managed," says Jackson Njeru, a prominent Kenyan blogger who
created the controversial Facebook page Deadbeat Kenya. "When I watched
the video, something was not adding up. The lady was smiling. She was
laughing," he tells BBC Trending. He believes the woman, her "husband"
and the television crew were working in collaboration - one of a number
of groups that deliberately target pastors and other powerful
individuals.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Ruth Nesoba,
 a BBC journalist based in Kenya, says "apparently what is emerging is a
 clique of freelance cameramen who are going round looking for these
kind of stories." News outlets pay good money for the footage, she adds,
 as the stories attract wide audiences.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It isn't yet
 clear whether Githinji's encounter with the woman arose organically, or
 he was targeted in a sting operation. Either way, Nesoba thinks that
for many Kenyans, it isn't the most important question. "People are
asking: 'Whether he was lured or not, what is a pastor doing in bed with
 his pants down with a woman who is not is wife?' "</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>

Chibok Girls Who Escaped From Boko Haram Explains-- We Went Through Hell To Survive

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

We have heard some of the abducted Chibok girls were lucky enough to
escape.These are the accounts of some of those lucky girls who have
since been reconciled with their parents. Sunday<a href="http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/escape-boko-haram-went-hell-survive-chibok-school-girls/" target="_blank"> Vanguard</a> met with four of the escapee girls whose heroic accounts are recorded below.
<br />
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
<b><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6589160015449763735" name="more"></a><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>First is Saratu Isa, 19, who wants to become a <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD12">teacher</span> some day. Narrating her story, she told Sunday Vanguard that after their SSCE papers on the fateful day, they retired to their <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD4">hostel</span> to rest and prepare for the next day’s papers.</b></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
In the night, they slept. She woke sometime later. She also woke up her
friend, Comfort Ayuba (born on March 28, 1997), and asked her if she
heard the rumour that Boko Haram was about to invade <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD10">the school</span>. The friend said it was a lie, yet they attempted to locate a safe corner within the hostel to use as hideout if <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">the Islamic</span> terrorists eventually entered the school.But before they could secure a hideout, they started hearing <a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6747821070134156749" name="more"></a>barking orders to other girls in the hostel.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“The claim of people saying that the jihadists came to the school with
so many vehicles is not true. No! Their vehicles were packed far away
inside the bush. They came in and told us they had come to protect us
from an impending danger, since there was no security in the school and immediately they started assembling us in a <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD5">single</span> file and marching us to the bush.”<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a></blockquote>
<div>
It was at that point that some of the girls started having hunches but
it was too late to do anything because the invaders, armed to the teeth
and dressed in army uniform, were barking orders that any girl who
attempted to play games would be killed and it was obvious that they
were not joking.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<div>
Three girls were saved by divine intervention. According to Saratu, two
Christians and one Muslim who arrived the park late and wanted to play a
 fast one. The insurgents asked them their religion and one of the
Christians said she was a Muslim. The Muslim identified herself but the
third girl didn’t deny her religion. She said she was a Christian. They
asked her to change her religion or be killed; she said she would rather
 die than change her religion.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<b>This dialogue ensued:</b></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<b>Boko Haram:</b> Didn’t we ask you not to go to English School?</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<b>Christian Girl:</b> I was born here in Chibok and have never been to
any Taboc School. I was born into a Christian home and will remain a
Christian.</div>
<div>
So the three girls were asked to lie down and that they were going to
kill them, beginning with the unrepentant Christian. Without displaying
any emotion, <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD11">the Christian</span> girl was the first to lie down saying they should go ahead and kill her.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
And a debate among the Boko Haram men, with some of them saying they
should kill the kafir (infidel) while others argued against it. So she
was asked to get up. We were all still in the bush where the vehicles
were. The Boko Haram men continued their argument as to whether to kill
or not to kill the Christian. Soon the vehicles the men brought were
full and there was no space for the three girls. So they were asked to
go. So the three of them left and started heading home.</div>
</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“We trekked the long distance into the bush where they had parked their
lorries and other vehicles. Soon after, the vehicles began a voyage into
 the forest. We were five that were locked up in the booth of a car and
we had no means of knowing how long; the journey took. We were just
there until God knows how long; then they came to a final stop. While we
 were moving, the five of us were praying and hoping that people or the
army would pursue and catch up with them. Eventually we entered Sambisa.
 When we entered Sambisa, we were given bread and water and told to eat.
 Of course, the girls were too angry to accept the offer of food. So,
they refused to eat. The men attempted to persuade them to eat.<br />
“On arrival, we <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">discovered</span> that
an earlier batch had arrived the same destination that looked like the
camp of militants. As soon as we arrived, Comfort came up with an idea
that we look for a convenient place to ease ourselves. We told the men
that we needed to ease ourselves and they allowed the three of us to go.
 After we walked some distance from the camp, Comfort said we should
make haste and run away.<br />
“The third girl, a Muslim, with fear written all over her, said we
should not run away when we had not eaten and weak; but Comfort insisted
 that that was the only chance we had to escape. She added that she
would not die in this forest”.</blockquote>
 Saratu followed her while the third girl returned to the camp.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“We kept walking away from Sambisa forest. As we progressed in the
escape bid, we met one man. He didn’t say anything to us. We didn’t know
 what he was doing inside the forest but we were too afraid to find out.
 Later, we met another woman who also didn’t talk to us.<br />
“Eventually, we came to one village and met one Fulani man who gave us
water and food. We were too hungry and thirsty and so we ate. He
directed us where to follow to our village and so we continued the
journey until we met two men . The men were kind; gave us water and
clothes to change the ones we wore. Initially, we refused because we
were afraid. We kept going, but one of the men followed us, saying they
were only trying to help.<br />
“As we went on, we met another man who told us to come and sleep in his
house because it was night already and we entered the house, believing
God had planted angels on our path to freedom. We entered and slept in
his house. The man woke us up at about 3:00 a.m. and told us that the
village people were wicked and if they found out we were there, they
would kill us. He directed us where to follow, warning that if we saw
any <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD6">motorcycle</span> or vehicle, we should enter the bush.<br />
“He insisted that we should avoid being noticed by anybody. The man told
 us that when we hear a call to prayers, we should stop wherever we are
until the prayer is finished. We saw a man and asked him direction to
our village and he told us. We continued until we arrived Chibok where
we met the army personnel. After narrating our story, they took us to <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD9">the barracks</span>
 where we took our bath and were given food to eat”. Altogether, they
spent five days between the time they were captured and the time they
returned home.</blockquote>
<b>Rahab Yaya was born on August 8,1998 in Chibok. Her escape story:</b><br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
“Like Saratu and Comfort, he also decided that there was no way the
night would meet us in that thick forest. So, we followed the example of
 our two colleagues, pretending we needed to ease ourselves and, after
much pleading, they allowed us thinking that we would be afraid and
return in no time because of the fearful nature of the forest. We walked
 a long distance and always making sure none of the men was trailing us.<br />
“All through the night, we continued our journey to freedom. We went
without food and water for several days, hoping we would see persons who
 would be sympathetic to our plight.<br />
“But no help came until dawn, the <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD7">next day</span>,
 when a Good Samaritan who heard our story, out of pity, gave us bread
and water. He told us to be careful because the insurgents were
operating in the neighborhood, seeking who to kidnap. With renewed
strength, we continued even when we didn’t know where we were going.</blockquote>
<br />
According to her, after several days of a seemingly unending trauma,
without clean up and any change of clothes, they eventually arrived
Chibok to the warm embrace of <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD1">their parents</span> who had searched everywhere for them and immediately people recommended that they go to hospitals for</div>

A Magistrate Court sitting in Abuja has discharged the Africa
independent Television (AIT) journalist, Mr. Amaechi Anakwe, who was
arrested and detained for over eight hours on Thursday on the order of
AIG in charge of Zone 7, Joseph Mbu, over an allegation of defamation of
 character.</div>
<br />
When the matter was called on Friday, the defence counsel, John Kalu,
urged the court to oblige him a copy of the first information to enable
him know the offence Amaechi was being charged for.<br />
<br />
Prosecution counsel, Chijoke Okezie, in an oral application told the
court that the plaintiff had withdrawn the case and that the accused
person was brought to his office for further clarification.<br />
<br />
The application was not opposed by the defence counsel, rather, he
begged the court for an order preventing the plaintiff or its privies
from further harassing or arresting Amaechi.<br />
<br />
In a short ruling delivered by the Chief Magistrate, Anthony Ogboi, the court discharged the accused.<br />

The coalition said the unlawful detention of the journalist who was

Speaking with journalists yesterday at a media briefing organised by the

by the various acts of impunity carried about by various government
bodies and people in power without any form of repercussions saying “no

PDP guber candidate Jarrett Tenebe Caught in Crude Oil Theft: Implicates Jonathan’s Top Men & Women

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
 </div>
Jarrett Tenebe, a Peoples democratic Party gubernatorial candidate and a
 politically well-connected oil thief arrested by the EFCC reportedly
shocked investigators by revealing that he received cover from several
senior government officials and top politicians, including Mike
Oghiadomhe, ex-Chief of Staff to President Goodluck Jonathan; Chief Tony
 Anenih, chair of PDP board of trustees and the Petroleum Minister,
Diezani Alison-Madueke.<br />
<br />
The EFCC was still holding Mr. Tenebe after arresting him last week for
alleged theft of massive amounts of crude oil in Nigeria.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
An EFCC source disclosed that Mr. Tenebe, who hails from Edo State, told
 investigators that his powerful political patrons and protectors
enabled him to carry out lucrative crude oil theft from Nigeria under
the guise of evacuating stolen crude on behalf of the federal
government. Among the political patrons are:</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6589160015449763735" name="more"></a>Mrs. Alison-Madueke, Oghiadomhe, Anenih, a close confidant of President Jonathan, and James Jephthah.<br />
<br />
According to Sahara Reporters, the stolen crude oil was reportedly sold in Ghana.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxmfmQCNtpp2sk3eMsnfIddr7JfIsiMw4Pb15Efx2W_vBHR1F47XHBT4YEWAHc7OYQnOT1olZt3k9RCQCNRMdVJINFhsAyWgPYtHe1ctCQYphbrezjvOCs87q_ryyKQF_qYjeam2tc2eQ/s1600/Jarrett+Tenebe.jpg" width="320" /></div>
The suspect, Mr. Tenebe, came under renewed scrutiny after US
investigators informed the Nigeria’s law enforcement authorities that
several vessels linked to Mr. Tenebe’s Fenix Impex Nigeria Limited were
involved in the ferrying of stolen crude from Nigeria to Ghana via the
Saltpond oil platform in the West African country.<br />
<br />
EFCC source disclosed that the agency was able to arrest Mr. Tenebe only
 because US investigators were involved. The source added that, since
the suspect’s arrest last week, the EFCC had been under intense pressure
 from several quarters to muddle up the case in order to spring the
suspect free.<br />
<br />
Our sources revealed that this is the second time Mr. Tenebe and his
main collaborator have been in trouble this year. Earlier this year, the
 suspect and Peter Omoh Dunia (aka Peter Black), a close political
associate of Tony Anenih in Edo state, were also arrested, but they were
 able to pull political strings that ensured their release without
prosecution.<br />
<br />
In March 2014, Nigerian soldiers, who were under the command of
Brigadier General Azinta, had arrested Mr. Tenebe and Mr. Dunia. The two
 men’s arrest came after soldiers found fraudulent crude oil evacuation
contracts in their possession. One Rear Admiral Austin Oyagha of the
Nigerian Navy reportedly signed the evacuation documents on behalf of
the Nigerian navy.<br />
<br />
Following their arrest by the soldiers in Benin City, Mr. Tenebe and Mr.
 Dunia were caught red handed when they tried to bribe Brigadier General
 Azinta, the brigade commander of the Nigerian Army in Benin. Both men
were in possession of $65,000, which was meant to bribe General Azinta.<br />
<br />
Our EFCC source disclosed that the brigade commander reportedly played
along with his would-be bribers for some days before arranging their
arrest. The army officer handed over the bribe money to investigators as
 evidence against the two suspects. <br />
<br />
However, the brigade commander was told that the suspects would be moved
 to Bayelsa State and handed over to the Joint Task Force (JTF). The
move was part of a design to ensure their smooth release without
prosecution. One of our sources told SaharaReporters that James Jephthah
 (aka Octopus), a very close friend of President Goodluck Jonathan, used
 his access to Aso Rock to obtain approval for the transfer of the case
to Bayelsa where he eventually influenced the JTF to release Mr. Tenebe.<br />
<br />
The EFCC officially declined to comment on the ongoing investigation of
the Saltpond scam. However, a top official of the agency disclosed that
the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, had ordered
 the agency not to take any action until her return to Abuja. Ms.
Alison-Madueke is currently on a short vacation in the UK while awaiting
 the completion of the multi-million dollar renovation of her Abuja
mansion.<br />
<br />
A source at the EFCC told SaharaReporters that Mr. Tenebe’s political
contacts had helped him to get appointed as an agent who sells crude oil
 seized from illegal marketers. The source added, however, that Mr.
Tenebe’s politically powerful sponsors also arranged for the suspect to
lift additional hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil, which he sold
at great profit to different European oil dealers using Ghana as the
point of sale.</div>
