He said that he would not only have s*x with my wife but will marry her as his second wife. I had to draw the attention of Baba Ade (his uncle) to their behaviour. He advised me to drag one of them to him, so that he would ask the person what the issues were. I heeded his warning and tried to drag Segun to see Baba Ade. He gave me a sicken­ing blow on the head, it was so painful that I picked up the knife that they used to slaugh­ter the ram and stabbed him. My initial plan was to give him a mark that he would not forget but I mistakenly stabbed him on the neck and he bled profusely. When she gave birth, she contin­ued the friendship since I was still giving her money. I don’t know how Wasiu got to know about our affair. I was in the house preparing to go to the mosque when I heard people shouting outside that Wasiu had killed someone. Little did he know that the passion he had for her would destroy his life in the nearest future.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Trouble started barely a year into their marriage, when he discovered that he was about to lose his wife, Barakat to his best friend, Tunji Bello with whom she had been entan­gled in a secret romance,<b> Sun news</b> reports.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Moved by rage caused by a possible loss of his wife to his friend, Wasiu allegedly slaughtered another man simply identified as Segun on the last Eid-el-kabir day (October 4) who he claimed conspired with Tunji to snatch his wife, Barakat.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After the reality dawned on him, Wasiu fled their base in Eredo community, Epe Local Gov­ernment Area of Lagos and went into hiding till he was re­cently fished out by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, at the Lagos Police Command, Ikeja.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Sad and yet to come to terms with the consequence of his action, Wasiu in police custody, SAID it was the love that he had for Barakat that made him dead­ly jealous. “I could not live with the fact that my friend snatched my wife from me. To make matters worse, he would always remind me of my loss. I can’t believe that I am now known and tagged a murderer. In fact, my eyes opened as soon as I stabbed that man,” he said.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Going down memory lane, Wasiu narrated that he met his wife, Barakat in Ikorodu while he was on a visit to the town. “She is black and very beautiful. She was actually selling recharge cards by the roadside. Pretending I wanted to buy a card, I chatted her up and we became friends. I visited her severally till she agreed to be my friend after six months of wait. The delay in convincing her, made me to fall so much more in love with her. She later got pregnant and I quickly visited her home and paid her bride price.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">“All was well till I relocated her to Epe. To make ends meet, I would travel down to Lagos Island to hustle and return by weekend with goodies for my family. I intro­duced Tunji to my wife and he assured that he would take care of her while I was away. I never knew that he had plans.”</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">According to Wasiu, he found it hard to believe when he started hearing rumours that his friend had taken over his wife who just gave birth. “I did not believe it but when I confronted her, she confirmed that Tunji was toasting her but denied that they had an affair. Since she was a nursing mother, I thought it was not possible. Days before the Ileya fes­tival (Muslim celebration), I gave my wife N1500 to make her hair and another N1500 to take our child to Ikorodu for treatment. He had rashes and my mother-in-law requested that the baby should be brought to her.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">“I was shocked when I called her mother and she told me that Barakat was yet to get to Ikorodu. When she finally picked my call, she claimed that she had gone to see a friend. It was then that I realised that Tunji was not also in town. I don’t need a soothsayer to tell me where she was. When she finally returned a day to Ileya, she said that she was with Tunji. I was heartbroken but my rage took over my soul when Tunji saw me the next day and dared me. He said that he would not only have s*x with my wife but will marry her as his second wife. I was mad and tried to control myself from killing him.”</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Determined to toe the path of peace, Wa­siu claimed that he reported the matter to the elders of the village but Tunji refused to stay away from his wife. “It was just a waste of time and energy because the matter became worse”, he added.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">On the day of the incident, Wasiu spe­cifically asked God to help him erase the thoughts of Barakat from his mind but he never knew the reverse would be the case. “I was devastated and my emotions badly hurt. While we were preparing the ram that would be eaten, Tunji came on a bike with one heavily built man. They kept driving past me making jest of me. I had to draw the attention of Baba Ade (his uncle) to their behaviour. He advised me to drag one of them to him, so that he would ask the person what the issues were. I heeded his warning and tried to drag Segun to see Baba Ade. He gave me a sicken­ing blow on the head, it was so painful that I picked up the knife that they used to slaugh­ter the ram and stabbed him. My initial plan was to give him a mark that he would not forget but I mistakenly stabbed him on the neck and he bled profusely. I knew he would die and the community might set me on fire, so I ran into the bush and escaped to Lagos Island”, Wasiu further narrated.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When reminded that he might be hanged or sentenced to life imprisonment for mur­der, Wasiu burst into tears and said: “Tunji has succeeded in taking over my wife, whom I love so much. I am ready to die for the love of my wife. It is unfortunate that I can no longer be there to fight him. I am finished”.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Last Monday, when Saturday Sun visited Eredo community, in Epe Local Government Area where the incident happened, Tunji was seen hanging out with some of his friends during which he was arrested by SARS op­eratives who had been trailing him. He told Saturday Sun that it was not his fault that Barakat chose to start a relationship with him. “I met her last year and never knew that she was married to my former friend. That time, she was heavily pregnant. She com­plained bitterly that her husband was not tak­ing care of her and her unborn child. I started assisting her before I knew that Wasiu is the husband. When she gave birth, she contin­ued the friendship since I was still giving her money. I don’t know how Wasiu got to know about our affair. The truth is that if Barakat still likes him, she would not come back to me after she had been warned severally.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">“I never knew that he would go as far as killing someone because of her. I thank God that I was not close by. It was my dear friend, Segun that was killed. He decided to kill him because he thought that I was making mock­ery of him.”</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When asked where Barakat was, Tunji alleged that he relocated her to Ijebu Ode where he rented a room apartment for her. “Ijebu Ode is close by and I normally go there to work. I kept her there for her own good since her husband will be sent to jail for the rest of his life.”</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When contacted on Wasiu’s claims on what happened on the day of the incident, Baba Ade, who was mentioned as an eyewit­ness, said that he and others made efforts to convince Tunji to stay away from his friend’s wife. “I am not Wasiu’s father or blood rela­tion but I took him as my own son. I was in the house preparing to go to the mosque when I heard people shouting outside that Wasiu had killed someone. It happened at the spot where some young men were assisting me to kill ram for the last muslim festival,” Baba Ade said, pointing at a spot around his house.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">He lamented that it was the fear of losing Barakat to another man that led to the ugly incident. “I have been aware since the in­ception of this marriage that Tunji had been meddling in that relationship. He is not from this area; it was Wasiu that introduced him to his wife. I even pleaded with Wasiu to report the matter to the village head, Olotu, but he could not resolve the matter.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">“This issue dragged on till Barakat who is a nursing mother, got pregnant for Tunji. She aborted the baby. It got to a point that she eloped with Tunji. I even advised Wasiu as an elder to let go. It was during the recent Ileya festival when Tunji was deliberately jeering at him that Wasiu came to me and I advised him to drag one of them to me if they repeated it. Minutes later, I heard people shouting that Wasiu had killed someone.</span></span><br /> <span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">“I don’t know why he decided to waste his life in such a way. As a Muslim, he is entitled to at least four wives. Why didn’t he choose another woman? I grew up there as a little boy and it was there I had the fondest memories of my life. As soon as I got into town, word went round and friends started calling to find out where I was. I hooked up with my childhood best friend, Patrick, and we decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather by going for a walk through the town to recall some of our funniest memories from childhood.</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The first thing we laughed about was how Bright Okpocha, the comedian known as Basketmouth, took us along to steal his father’s fowl. We were four very close friends who practically did everything together. I lived in the prison barracks and I was always telling them mouth-watering stories of how those of us who lived there regularly made chicken pepper soup and plantain porridge with fowls in the barracks. I never knew Basketmouth was licking his lips to my stories all along until he called us one very beautiful morning to steal his father’s fowl. We got to his family house the next morning and executed the fowl like trained assassins. Basketmouth and myself were assigned to cook the jollof rice while Patrick and Godwin (Basketmouth’s immediate older brother) kept watch in case their mum got back from the market earlier than anticipated. After cooking, Basketmouth, thinking because he had the biggest eye balls among us demanded to be given the best part of the chicken.</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We wasted no time in reminding him of his age compared with everyone else’s. We ate everything and thought that we had rid the house of any evidence that could have incriminated us. We didn’t realise that Basketmouth forgot to throw away the feathers of the fowl. Later in the day when we were gathered at another friend’s place recounting our exploits for the day, Basketmouth’s little brother walked up from nowhere and said their father was calling all of us. See gobe! We knew instantly that we had been caught and it was due to Basketmouth’s negligence.</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">  </span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The first thing the old man said when he saw us was “O Bright, you have eaten my heart.” We fought back laughter, fearing a double dose of whatever punishment we had coming. Oh! We teased Basketmouth and his brother Godwin with that line afterwards. We escaped without punishment. Thank God for his beautiful mum who pleaded on our behalf because she loved us all like her own. Patrick and I strolled further down town to the secondary school we attended and had a good laugh imitating Daddy Showkey, who was our senior in school and was always walking around the school premises, wearing bathroom slippers. His uniform was never tucked in but he was always punishing us for ‘flying’ our uniforms. The junior students dreaded him like hell. We talked about how the late Evangelist Sunny Okosuns was said to have been a very playful boy in one of the public primary schools in the town. On our way to the prison yard, we passed by the house where Rev. Kris Okotie grew up.</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We talked about life in the prison barracks and how being the son of the chief warder of the maximum security prison gave me the opportunity to meet very influential Nigerians in the prison yard. I remember my dad taking me to say hello to General Shehu Yar’Adua one evening after his lawn tennis game. I watched him play lawn tennis almost every evening in the yard in his impeccable white shorts and T-shirt. And there were always a handful of prisoners helping with the stray balls. I witnessed the General yell at an overzealous prisoner who dashed into the court unnecessarily to retrieve a loose ball.</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I also told my friend how Major Al Mustapha jokingly asked me what crime I had committed to be in the yard. I quickly informed him that I was the son of the chief warder. Till date, Major Al Mustapha is regarded as the best thing to have happened to the inmates of Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison by the inmates. He uplifted the spirits of the inmates by sponsoring various activities in the prison yard. He sponsored the prison football team and helped so many of the inmates gain their freedom. I always saw him seated by the side of the field cheering the players. Sometimes in the company of General Bamaiyi and Colonel Gwadabe, who were also inmates at the time. Other high profile inmates in the yard at that time were Fred Ajudua and Ade Bendel. Ade Bendel also rocked the prison yard with his swag. While other inmates wore ordinary prison uniforms, his was made of jeans and a well tailored shirt to match. They loved him like crazy for his benevolence. He built a hall for the prisoners and invited Basketmouth to perform. Basketmouth was scared to go alone and he asked me to accompany him, which I did.</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We talked about life outside the barracks when my dad retired. How Yakubu Aiyegbeni moved in with a friend living in my compound. We always ‘yabbed’ him as he walked about the compound with his big ‘yansh.’ Till date, we are still amazed how he played so brilliantly and effortlessly with such a body size. Sunday Oliseh was a member of our senior football team. Members of the junior team were made to pick balls while the senior team trained. Coach Fanny Amun came to town at different times to plead with the father of a member of our senior team to play for him. That happened after a game the senior team of the town played against the national under 17 team, coached by Fanny Amun. </span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br /></span></span> <span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We also talked about how Victor Okechukwu Agali, who was known in Kirikiri Town and Satellite Town as “Okey Banana” made it from hawking bananas in the streets to playing football for Schalke 04 in Germany. And how happy we were collecting tips from Samson Siasia to watch over his car whenever he visited his brother who was doing time in prison. We talked about how we used to listen to team mates laugh about how they tortured Osaze Odemwingie while they played football at the Pepsi Academy. Back then, every player in our team had a crush on Ann Echiejine, the first goalie for the Falcons. She was a member of the town’s female football team. She joined us in training regularly and she became better for it. It seemed training with the male team improved her skills tremendously. Some overzealous security operatives also used batons on the hapless women who were frustrated for being hoodwinked by Mrs. Jonathan to come for the "empowerment program" she had claimed was from the MDG, only to be confronted with a political rally for the president’s re-election. One of the bags of Rice with expired Rice Sahara Reporters Media<br /><br />One woman who could not hold her frustration and anger, Preye Dressman, said the whole thing was deceitful.<br /><br />"We came from our communities since 5 a.m.; I have not eaten and stayed under sun and rain, and now they are sending us home with empty hands.”<br /><br />A motorist, Stella Honesty, wondered why the President’s wife was coming to give Bayelsa women empowerment items to the people this late in her husband’s tenure.<br /><br />She said, “Is it because general elections are around the corner? In fact, if I were some people, I will reject any empowerment. Where was she all this while? Some of us have refused to be deceived by this political gimmick. Look at the kind of suffering one is going through because she is coming. Must she create tension each time she visits anywhere? I have been trapped in this traffic logjam for a long time for a journey that would not have been more than 30 minutes.” Commuters and motorists who were trapped in the gridlock created by the visit were seen struggling to make detours.<br /><br />The MDGs, a United Nations benchmark which is aimed at eradicating extreme poverty and hunger for all citizens, became the basis for a political campaign ground for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), a political group affiliated with President Jonathan’s re-election. Several bags of rice repackaged in bags branded with Mr. Jonathan’s photos, sewing machines, hair dryers, and tricycles known also “Keke NAPEP” were distributed to some at the rally. However, several of the women left empty-handed.<br /><br />A cursory investigation showed that most of the items, especially food items, had expired, and most them were later diverted to Peoples Democratic Party politicians for onward distribution exclusively to their followers.<br /><br />Mrs. Jonathan, who was formerly a civil servant in the state, resigned a few weeks ago even though she had never shown up for a single day of work before and after Governor Seriake Dickson promoted her to the position of permanent secretary.</span></span></div>
