 The Niger State command of the Department of State Services (DSS) on 
Monday paraded Sampson Oghenedoro, a 28-year old staff of the Nigerian 
Television Authority (NTA) for demanding N50 million from the state 
government to stop him from broadcasting a story on alleged fraudulent 
activities within the government.<br />
<br />
According to DailyTrust, the suspect was paraded at the state command in
 Minna and the state of director, Dr. Larry Obiagwu, said Sampson was 
picked up by his men at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja 
while on his way to Minna to collect the said amount.<br />
<br />
Sampson who works with the NTA Asaba, Delta state, as a producer/cameraman, operates under the<br />
name Fajiro Oliver, also works with Elomboh Communications, an online 
news medium. Obiagwu explained that Sampson and two others, Stanley Gene
 and Francis Arinze both now at large, co-founded the Secret Reporters 
Group (SRG) with the alleged sole objective of blackmailing government 
officials and heads of organisations for pecuniary benefits.<br />
<br />
He said in July and August, the suspect alerted top officials of the 
Niger state government on a threat to expose fraudulent activities 
taking place within the government or be paid N50 million to drop the 
story.<br />
<br />
Obiagwu, however said that Sampson and his accomplices did not carry out
 any investigation on the Niger state government and that as a member of
 staff of the NTA in Delta state, Niger State is not part of his 
jurisdiction.<br />
<br />
Speaking to journalists, the suspect said he had nothing to do with the 
alleged demand of N50 million from the state government, saying he was 
only on his way to Minna to balance his story.</div>

The Defence Headquarters has confirmed that the self-acclaimed leader of
 the wicked Boko Haram sect, Mr. Mohammed Bashir, alias "Abubakar 
Shekau" had died in an encounter with troops in Konduga.<br />
<br />
The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, 
confirmed the death of Shekau at a news conference in Abuja on 
Wednesday. I<br />

“In course of encounters, one Mohammed Bashir, who has been acting or 
posing as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as
 the leader of the group died.<br />
<br />
“Since the name Shekau has become a brand name for the terrorists’ 
leader, the Nigerian military remains resolute to serve justice to 
anyone who assumes that designation or title."<br />

General Olukolade said the same fate await all terrorists who sought "to
 violate the freedom and territory of Nigeria". The defence spokesman 
said that the deceased Shekau was also known as "Abacha Abdullahi 
Geidam" and "Damasack".<br />

Also, he said another 133 terrorists surrendered to Nigeria on Tuesday, bringing the total number to 148.</div>

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has accused Pastor Ayo 
Oritsejafor of smearing the image of the Christian Association of 
Nigeria (CAN), saying it is wrong for his plane to be associated with 
the scandalous “arms deal” in South Africa.</div>

Speaking on BBC Hausa Service monitored in Kaduna on Wednesday, 
Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, who is the Archbishop of Jos and President,
 Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria, said they had been watching with
 sadness how Oristejafor had been hobnobbing with the Presidency for 
long. He accused the CAN President of dragging Christianity into the 
mud.<br />

In the words of Bishop Kaigama: “It is not proper; the guilty must be 
punished. It is not acceptable for a Christian leader to be seen always 
with the President. We in the Catholic have always picked holes in 
Oritsejafor’s style of leadership in CAN and we even wanted to stop 
attending CAN meeting at the national level.”</blockquote>

He faulted the way Pastor Oritsejafor was running CAN and urged the 
authorities to investigate the matter dispassionately and ensure that

restore the security situation in troubled parts of the country and 
expressed worry over the situation in the Northeast.</div>

The Ekiti State Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday claimed he 
had uncovered a plot by the All Progressives Congress, APC, to ensure 
that the Speaker of the state House of Assembly becomes the next 
governor of the state instead of him, who defeated their candidate in an
 election.<br />
<br />
The governor-elect said this was the primary reason a socio-political 
group, Ekiti-11, went to court to ensure that it could achieve this 
through the back door. He made the claims at a press conference in 
Lagos.<br />
<br />
While explaining the circumstances surrounding the attack on a judge in 
the state on Wednesday during a court proceeding on the eligibility suit
 filed against him on Monday, Fayose said it was through such a 
"dubious" court judgement that a former governor, Segun Oni, was ousted,
 paving the way for Governor Kayode Fayemi of the APC in 2010.<br />

In his words: “The whole scheming in Ekiti State is just about the APC 
obtaining judgement through the back door after losing elections on June
 20, 2014. You will recall that Segun Oni’s tenure was truncated through
 this back door judgement by some judicial officers who have been 
compromised. </blockquote>

“They can go as far as losing their career if and when politicians pay them well...</blockquote>

Assembly, who is an APC member, claiming that Fayose is not qualified to
 contest. I want to state that the people of Ekiti State are interested

process and steal the people’s mandate.”</blockquote>
He said there was the need for the judiciary in the state to be 
objective and fair, alleging that the judges in the state had been 
compromised because some of them were members of the Ekiti-11.<br />
<br />
Fayose vowed that the alleged plan of APC to ensure he is not sworn in on October 16 would not work.<br />
<br />
APC has however dismissed all the allegations, saying Fayose should just focus on his case in court.</div>

Borno-born journalist said to be a close ally of Boko Haram, Ahmad 
Salkida, has dismissed the report that the dreaded commander of the Boko
 Haram sect has been killing by troops in Konduga area.<br />
<br />
Salkida, who is on self-exile in the United Arab Emirates over alleged 
threats to his life, said he has it good on “authority” that Abubakar 
Shekau was hale and hearty. Salkida claimed that Shekau, who he had 
discussions with recently during a failed attempt to negotiate an end to
 the incarceration of the Chibok girls was not the one in a picture 
circulating online.<br />

“Mark my words: I have it on authority that Shekau is well and alive. 
The picture going round is not the person who torments us with his 
group,” the journalist stated categorically.</blockquote>

“<span style="color: #cc0000;">So far, no town taken by Boko Haram has been reclaimed by the Nigeria Army</span>.
 They were only able to prevent Konduga and Maiduguri from falling to

According to him, the Nigerian Army has only been able to repel the 
taking over of Konduga and Maiduguri but has failed in reclaiming the 
communities overrun during the sect’s recent expansionist drive.<br />

He accused the security forces of taking the war against terrorism to 
the pages of the newspapers rather than committing energy and resources 
in reclaiming the “lost territories.”<br />
<br />
“Konduga was a turning point for the Nigeria Army but the journey to an 
assured future is still long and tough. Nigeria must take this fight 
away from pages of newspapers and confront it overly. We are yet to get 
it right but Iet us pray for victory for Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“If history is a mirror then what have we learnt? To reclaim lost 
territories in the north east means to restore peace and order by civil 
authorities. Is this the case in the north east? I will leave the answer

Writing on Twitter, Salkida, who is widely reported to have had an

As article after article is published about Nigerian Pastor T.B. Joshua 
in the wake of his tragic church building collapse, the bigotry and bias
 unashamedly displayed by the South African media have finally compelled
 me to react.<br />
<br />
I must confess I don’t often attempt to order my eclectic myriad of 
ruminations into words, especially on such a sensitive, sorrowful issue.
 As a patriotic South African, I am still trying to come to terms with 
the tragic incident that veiled our country in a cloak of sadness this 
week. My heart bleeds for those who lost loved ones in the church 
collapse in Lagos, Nigeria that sent 84 salvation-seeking South Africans
 to an early grave. May their souls rest in perfect, permanent peace.<br />
<br />
At this juncture, I don’t want to attempt to proffer reasons as to the 
cause of this tragic incident; let’s leave professional investigators to
 their job.<br />
<br />
My concern is the prejudiced media reports within the public sphere, myopic headlines such as<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6589160015449763735" name="more"></a>‘TB Joshua: Profile of an accomplished performer’ incensing a barrage of vitriolic comments online.<br />
<br />
Let me elaborate at this point that I have undertaken a ‘spiritual 
pilgrimage’ to The SCOAN on one occasion back in June 2013, a decision I
 certainly don’t regret despite my initial cynicism. The visit, albeit 
unusual, was spiritually enriching and I can attest to the constructive 
changes my life has seen since.<br />
<br />
Before going further, please drop the stereotypical connotation that I 
am one of those ‘T.B. Joshua fanatics’ who offer ill-conceived rebuttals
 toward the slightest hint of criticism against ‘my pastor’. I am not 
here to ascribe undue praise to any man or adopt the ‘sheepish 
mentality’ that has sadly led many would-be Christians today into 
elevating their pastors to an unhealthy ‘godlike’ status. However, 
putting my personal convictions aside, the reports being circulated by 
our media do not accurately reflect the ministry of Pastor T.B. Joshua.<br />
<br />
Let me cite just a couple of examples. Painting the picture of a 
‘flamboyant millionaire’ who is ‘milking the masses’, multiple reports 
highlight Joshua’s alleged wealth, citing a Forbes article which stated 
he is the third richest pastor in Nigeria. How many media houses, 
however, reported his immediate denunciation of this report, requesting 
his name to be removed from the rich list? “There is not enough to keep 
for tomorrow. As it comes, we give it for the needy,” he said in 
response.<br />
<br />
On that note, have any media house highlighted Joshua’s extensive 
humanitarian endeavours? The same Forbes article being quoted calls 
Joshua Nigeria’s most philanthropic pastor, claiming he has given “over 
$20 million to causes in education, healthcare and rehabilitation 
programs” – a fact our journalists ‘conveniently’ left out in their 
write-ups. Indeed, I have never once heard T.B. Joshua campaigning for 
money or scrolling bank details across Emmanuel TV in the name of 
‘fund-raising’, a nauseating practice that distanced me from most of his
 evangelical counterparts.<br />
<br />
Another popular article which was widely read stating this incident was 
the fourth building to have collapsed at SCOAN is nothing but malicious 
misrepresentation. A look at Joshua’s intriguing documentary, ‘This Is 
My Story’ reveals the said ‘buildings’ were barely formed structures 
that were destroyed by the elements over 15 years ago when his ministry 
was at a very primitive stage. The mention of such on The SCOAN website 
serves as an encouragement for people to never give up despite the 
‘storms of life’. Comparisons with the tragic incident last Friday are 
cruelly misplaced, probably to create an impression of insecurity or 
lack of safety.<br />
<br />
The media are repeatedly referring to an incident that happened over a 
decade ago when Springbok rugby player Wim Basson sadly perished even 
after visiting SCOAN. Yes, that’s true but what about those who have 
received healing through T.B. Joshua’s prayers? Why is it that such 
positive aspects of Joshua’s ministry have been surreptitiously excluded
 in the majority of news?<br />
<br />
After all, what drives the faithful droves to take the long journey to 
SCOAN week-in week-out, ignoring the threats of ‘Boko Haram’ and Ebola, 
if not for their firmly held convictions? Are the media insinuating that
 these thousands of South African pilgrims are mentally incapacitated or
 under some cryptic delusion? Also, how many of those making judgmental 
statements behind the comfort of their computer screens have met the 
man, heard him speak or partaken in one of his services? I have.<br />
<br />
Yes, T.B. Joshua is controversial, unconventional and unpredictable but 
that is no reason for the media to add needless sensationalism to a 
story that is already tragic enough. This is not a time to debate 
Joshua’s authenticity but to mourn with our brothers and sisters whose 
lives were lost.<br />
