<span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> Six weeks ago, I was in Benin City to support a friend who was getting married that weekend. We drove down to Ugbowo campus of UNIBEN, laughing along the way at bini guys and the way they pronounce certain words. We got stuck in an unusual traffic jam and my friend who was driving, took the opportunity to reply his pings, pausing only to turn up the radio when Wizkid’s “In My Bed” came on. A few seconds later, he increased the volume even more. I accepted that since I was in his car, I had to endure his choice of songs. So I listened, trying to figure out why he was interested in that particular song.<br /><br /><br />Though the melody has this jingle-catchy feel, everything else about the song is horrible. The mix brought to mind those days when Nigerian studio engineers were still learning how to mix. The overall instrumentation is noisy with the kick pitched high, like a headache. Played on F-sharp minor, which is a predominantly high key for most people, but the struggling syncopation over a lazy bass line weighs the whole song relentlessly down.<br /><br />My friends know that I have a crazy physical reaction to songs, mostly when I love it. In this instance, I was gasping for breath by the end, as if the song was trying to strangle me. I thanked God I was still alive when it finally ended. But as the traffic lingered my friend put down his phone, this time to surf through radio stations. Again, he landed on “In My Bed.” That was when I really got scared, thinking I was going to pass out.<br /><br />This year, we have had a mix of both good and bad songs. Wizkid’s “In my bed” is one of those ear worms you don’t want to get into your brain space for three minutes and 46 seconds. Those who will say “WTF” is Etcetera saying? I want you to note that I have a zero interest in persuading you to agree with me. If you enjoy “In My Bed,” I won’t dream of changing your mind. I heard it again last weekend at my manager’s party, and for a second, I thought it was some kind of pain killer advert, because the radio station where I have my show, currently runs an ad that sounds like a more palatable version of it.<br /><br />My Christmas day was almost ruined when a caller on my show requested “In My Bed” for his girlfriend. Because Christmas only comes once in a year, I decided to grant her wish, but as soon as I clicked play, I had the sort of physical reaction associated with someone suddenly coming in contact with bees.

If you are one of those who regard this song as a standard club track with all the necessary “thumps and bumps” and you are angry at my loathing of it, it doesn’t bother me at all. I have fantasised for weeks about punching this song in the eye, but unfortunately, the song doesn’t have a head, talkless of eyes.<br /><br /><br />How can one song cram in so many failed decisions per minute? One minute you are trying to woo a girl into your bed, the next, you are saying Tinubu eleniyan, Fashola eleniyan. What has Tinubu eleniyan got to do with getting her in your bed? Are you pimping her to Tinubu or to the other names you mentioned in the song? There’s nothing wrong with praise singing if you do it right. “In My Bed” sounds like a guy trying so hard to get it right and therefore getting it all wrong. You packed in the same overused lines “Anywhere I go all my people show me love / And people trying to bad mouth me. Don’t you think by now, we’ve heard enough of your sniffy little screech of being chased by enemies? It is boring already.<br /><br /><br />Even a connoisseur of pop trash won’t find anything to like about a song like this. “In My Bed” is one song you don’t need to know the lyrics, you may want to shield your friends and loved ones from its strange concoction. It is indeed the worse song of this or any other year. Oh sorry, this year is not over yet, so it’s theoretically possible a worse contender could emerge, but I doubt it. Let’s put it this way, if placed in comparison with any of Artquake’s songs, it would still be a distant second. Six weeks ago, I was in Benin City to 
support a friend who was getting married that weekend. We drove down to 
Ugbowo campus of UNIBEN, laughing along the way at bini guys and the way
 they pronounce certain words. We got stuck in an unusual traffic jam 
and my friend who was driving, took the opportunity to reply his pings, 
pausing only to turn up the radio when Wizkid’s “In My Bed” came on. A 
few seconds later, he increased the volume even more. I accepted that 
since I was in his car, I had to endure his choice of songs. So I 
listened, trying to figure out why he was interested in that particular 
song. </div>

Though the melody has this jingle-catchy feel, everything else 
about the song is horrible. The mix brought to mind those days when 
Nigerian studio engineers were still learning how to mix. The overall 
instrumentation is noisy with the kick pitched high, like a headache. 
Played on F-sharp minor, which is a predominantly high key for most 
people, but the struggling syncopation over a lazy bass line weighs the 
whole song relentlessly down. My friends know that I have a crazy 
physical reaction to songs, mostly when I love it. In this instance, I 
was gasping for breath by the end, as if the song was trying to strangle
 me. I thanked God I was still alive when it finally ended. But as the 
traffic lingered my friend put down his phone, this time to surf through
 radio stations. Again, he landed on “In My Bed.” That was when I really
 got scared, thinking I was going to pass out.</div>

This year, we have had a mix of both good
 and bad songs. Wizkid’s “In my bed” is one of those ear worms you don’t
 want to get into your brain space for three minutes and 46 seconds. 
Those who will say “WTF” is Etcetera saying? I want you to note that I 
have a zero interest in persuading you to agree with me. If you enjoy 
“In My Bed,” I won’t dream of changing your mind. I heard it again last 
weekend at my manager’s party, and for a second, I thought it was some 
kind of pain killer advert, because the radio station where I have my 
show, currently runs an ad that sounds like a more palatable version of 
it. My Christmas day was almost ruined when a caller on my show 
requested “In My Bed” for his girlfriend. Because Christmas only comes 
once in a year, I decided to grant her wish, but as soon as I clicked 
play, I had the sort of physical reaction associated with someone 
suddenly coming in contact with bees. And before my mind could process 
what was happening, I hammered the stop button quickly, arrgh! If you 
are one of those who regard this song as a standard club track with all 
the necessary “thumps and bumps” and you are angry at my loathing of it,
 it doesn’t bother me at all. I have fantasised for weeks about punching
 this song in the eye, but unfortunately, the song doesn’t have a head, 
talkless of eyes.</div>

How can one song cram in so many failed 
decisions per minute? One minute you are trying to woo a girl into your 
bed, the next, you are saying <em>Tinubu eleniyan, Fashola eleniyan</em>. What has <em>Tinubu eleniyan</em>
 got to do with getting her in your bed? Are you pimping her to Tinubu 
or to the other names you mentioned in the song? There’s nothing wrong 
with praise singing if you do it right. “In My Bed” sounds like a guy 
trying so hard to get it right and therefore getting it all wrong. You 
packed in the same overused lines “Anywhere I go all my people show me 
love / And people trying to bad mouth me. Don’t you think by now, we’ve 
heard enough of your sniffy little screech of being chased by enemies? 
It is boring already. Even a connoisseur of pop trash won’t find 
anything to like about a song like this. “In My Bed” is one song you 
don’t need to know the lyrics, you may want to shield your friends and 
loved ones from its strange concoction. It is indeed the worse song of 
this or any other year. Oh sorry, this year is not over yet, so it’s 
theoretically possible a worse contender could emerge, but I doubt it. 
Let’s put it this way, if placed in comparison with any of Artquake’s 
songs, it would still be a distant second. I can’t remember the last 
time there was a hit song this whack.</div>

There was once a Roman statesman, lawyer, political theorist, 
philosopher, widely considered one of Rome’s greatest orators and prose 
stylists. His name was Marcus Tullius Cicero who lived between (January 
3, 106 BC and December 7, 43 BC) Cicero is generally seen as one of the 
most versatile minds of Roman culture and his writings, the paragon of 
classical Latin. He introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek 
philosophy and created a Latin vocabulary.<br />

We learnt his childhood dream was "Always to be the best and far to 
excel the others." No wonder when he started his career as a lawyer 
around 83-81 BC, he successfully defended Sextus Roscius on a charge of 
parricide, which of course, was an indirect challenge to the dictator, 
Emperor Sulla, at that time and he had to travel to Athens with his 
brother and cousin, perhaps due to the potential wrath of Emperor Sulla.<br />
<br />
Why are we celebrating Marcus Cicero today? It is because he shared most
 of the sterling qualities with our own Uncle Bola Ige, popularly called
 “The Cicero” of Esa-Oke, considering his education background and 
profession as an astute lawyer, elder statesman, administrator, seasoned
 politician, educationist and undisputable leader of thought.<br />
<br />
However, sad enough, both men were murdered...<br />
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a>Perhaps, the only difference is that the power that 
be, that killed Marcus Cicero pride about it and even displayed his 
decapitated body for the people to see in that part of the world at that
 time taking a final revenge against Cicero’s power of speech while 
those who planned and killed our own “Cicero” are still hiding. The big 
question still, is who were those responsible for that cowardly act by 
killing Bola Ige on December 23, 2001 in his home at Ibadan? Life could 
indeed be an irony. This is the same Ibadan where he lived, served, 
developed when the opportunity came having being popularly elected as 
the first executive civilian Governor of the old Oyo State. This same 
Ibadan happened to be the seat of power, being the capital of the old 
Oyo State.<br />
<br />
It was said that when the title “Cicero” was given to honour Bola Ige by
 the people of Esa-Oke, his home town, because of the inherent traits he
 shared with Marcus Tullius Cicero of Rome, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the 
late sage, was not too comfortable with the title because of the way the
 power-that-be at that time killed Marcus Tullius Cicero. And most 
disheartening he was killed on our own soil though far away from Rome. 
Then, not only did political parties monitor governors elected under 
their platforms, even the governed were given the opportunity to 
evaluate the performances of their governors. Today, state parties 
hardly tell you their mission and only busy themselves in how to rig 
elections, crush any opposition and kill opponents depending on the 
level of desperation.<br />
<br />
Prior to the assassination, Ige was guest of His Royal Highness, Oba 
Okunade Sijuwade, the reigning Ooni of Ife and it was widely reported 
that some miscreants (apparently being sponsored by those who hated him)
 reportedly removed his cap and hung it on a tree in the palace area. 
One begins to wonder what has become of our society. What an irony! 
Years back, and precisely in 1980 at the same venue, the man, Uncle Bola
 Ige, was the centre of attraction as governor holding out the staff of 
office to the king-elect then during the installation and coronation.<br />
<br />
I think it is not too late for the police to start a thorough 
investigation from that angle. This to me should be acceptable as a 
careful thought with a view to unraveling the assassination and bring to
 book the killers now that we seem to embrace the rule of law in the 
country. It is only when the killers are caught that we can be talking 
of prosecution. And with the zeal of the Inspector General of Police, 
Suleiman Abba, he should be challenged to come out with something that 
will cleanse the shame of a nation, that a sitting Attorney General of 
the Federation was that murdered in his home and more than seven years 
after, the nation is still groping in the dark. Most Nigerians share the
 belief that the Nigerian Police is capable if it chooses to come out 
with the expected result.<br />
<br />
Of course, the Obasanjo administration did not help the police in that 
at the tail end of its tenure, it was widely reported that the former 
president at a gathering quickly admitted that one faceless drug baron 
which the then Ministry of Justice was planning to probe was responsible
 for the cowardly act. And because you cannot put something on nothing, 
on October 24, 2007, the court ordered the release from the Agodi Prison
 in Ibadan of the accused as advised by the state prosecution for want 
of evidence as usual and one cannot blame the defence lawyer boasting to
 even sue the Federal Government for damages while the real damage to 
the nation still looms and crime committed still unravelled.<br />
<br />
Some schools of thought believe that if Ige had remained in his 
self-styled “siddon look” posture at that time and not joined the 
Obasanjo government, he may still be alive or at worst, he may not have 
been slaughtered the way they did. In any case, death could also have 
come due to old age. Some of us also believe that his joining to serve 
at all under Obasanjo’s regime was a silent revolution or protest from 
the way and manner his party presidential primary at that time was 
conducted. No political reasoning could really explain the “wedlock” 
considering the events of the past and even in the present 
circumstances. Could it be considered that he went too far to have opted
 to serve under the Obasanjo’s regime? However, as patriotic as he was 
to serve his fatherland when he was invited, should not in any way make 
him one of the high profile political killings that will be swept under 
the usual sealed marble forever.<br />
<br />
Sometime ago, one high ranking police officer told the whole world that 
investigation could begin on any case if there are new findings, clues 
or trails but that it was “capital intensive”. This sounds comforting 
but not encouraging because the Nigerian economy is still strong enough 
to do more than unravelling this particular murder case with a view to 
bringing the killers to book. The police should be told that Nigerians 
deserve to know who killed “Uncle Bola Ige” as we used to call him then 
and of course, a host of others killed in similar circumstances for the 
sake of posterity and justice. More importantly, to prove to the world 
that we are able not only to detect crime but to carry out justice in 
the most civilised way as being done around the globe.<br />
<br />
I hope the police understand very well that a murder case in every clime
 is not statute-barred, which means the case cannot be closed at any 
given time. Issues of note are many in this particular case and that is 
why time cannot sweep it away so quickly. The idea is that this nation 
must not allow the unborn generation to taunt us that a democratically 
elected government was unable to find the murderers of a former 
Attorney-General of the Federation. It is now 13 years after the murder 
and the nation is still waiting and seems hopelessly counting.<br />
<br />
In fact, there is not even any hope for the common man when notables and
 nobles are being killed and nothing happens. My worry is that our 
children would found it really difficult to comprehend. By all means, 
Nigerians deserve to know who killed our own “Cicero”<br />

Respected publisher and ThisDay columnist, Waziri Adio on 26 December 
felt compelled to speak up and clear the air on false accusations that 
Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the APC was ‘sectional’ in 
the widely-acclaimed impact of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).<br />
<br />
It is yet another fact-based counter to the erroneous caricature of the 
detribalised Buhari by prominent Nigerians from across the country.</div>

In a series of 35 tweets, he made it clear that “the South got 70% in terms of amount located, and the North got 30%”.<br />

1. I will start tweeting about the Petroleum Special Trust Fund (PTF) headed @ThisIsBuhari between May '95 and May '99.<br />
<br />
2. There have been allegations that the PTF projects were lopsided in 
favour of the north, aimed at portraying @ThisIsBuhari as sectional.<br />
<br />
3. There have also been allegations of fraud in PTF, meant to show that @ThisIsBuhari not as clean as portrayed.<br />
<br />
4. I will provide some background on PTF and present some facts based on
 public documents and leave you to draw your conclusions.<br />
<br />
5. PTF was set up by Gen Abacha in May '95, headed by @ThisIsBuhari, with Chief Tayo Akpata as Secretary.<br />
<br />
Other members representing different zones were Y. Gusau, A Talib,  
Rufus Giwa,  Prof. Chimere Ikoku,  Prof. JP Clark,  D.B Zang.<br />
<br />
7. PTF was charged with using portion  of increase in fuel price to 
rehabilitate roads, schools, hospitals, water schemes n provide supplies<br />
<br />
8. Despite charges of being a parallel govt,  at no point was PTF budget more than 10% of total budget of the federation.<br />
<br />
9. Widely circulated allegation of lopsided siting of PTF projects by Afenifere a bit exaggerated.<br />
<br />
10. It is true that out of the 13,090km roads rehabilitated, 32% in the south and 68% in the north. But that's half the story.<br />
<br />
11. In terms of km, 7.3% of d rehabilitated roads were in SE; 8.5% in SW;16.25 in SS; 21.1% in NW; 23.4% in NE; and 23.5% in NC.<br />
<br />
12. But it is also true that the landmass varies among zones and same with degree of difficulty and cost.<br />
<br />
13. A look at the cost of roads in different zones and the overall 
allocation  to zones in all PTF projects show a different picture.<br />
<br />
14. N77. 2b was committed to roads out of the total of N187b allocated to PTF till May 99.<br />
<br />
15. Of the N77.2b to roads, SW got N 9.7 b; SE, N14.5b;  SS, N30.5b.  
This means SW got 12.6% of road budget; SE, 18.8%; SS, 39.5%.<br />
<br />
16. Of d N77.2b committed to roads,  NE got N7.1b; NC, N7. 4b;  NW, N7.9b, meaning NE got 9.2%, NC got 9.6% and NW 10.3%.<br />
<br />
17. This shows that in terms of cost, the variation btw north and south reversed in favour of d south.<br />
<br />
18. Under roads, the south got 70% in terms of amount allocated and the north got 30%.<br />
<br />
19. It may sound counter intuitive,  but it is also an established fact 
that road construction  costs more in the south than in the north.<br />
<br />
20. Those circulating facts about kilometers of roads possibly also have
 information about cost of the roads and total allocation.<br />
<br />
21. Possibly, they selectively chose the data set that will help their argument that @ThisIsBuhari is sectional.<br />
<br />
22. Also, of the total N187b allocated to PTF, the south got more than the north.<br />
<br />
23. In the 6 areas under PTF, SE got N26.9b; SW, N28.8b; SS, N49b.  Representing 15% for SE, 15.4% for SW, and 26.2% for SS.<br />
<br />
24. That is a total of 56.7% for the south out of the entire budget of PTF.<br />
<br />
25. Of d total PTF allocation, NC got N20bn; NE, N26b; and NW N34. 9b.  Meaning 10.7% for NC; 13.9% for NE; and 18.7% for NW.<br />
<br />
26. That's 43.3% for the North out of the total N187b allocation to PTF.<br />
<br />
27. On allegations of fraud in PTF under @ThisIsBuhari, it is important to  bear a few things in mind.<br />
<br />
28. OBJ set up two interim mgt committees on PTF, before eventually asking PTF to be wounded up.<br />
<br />
29. First committee was under Dr. Haroun Adamu. 2nd under Alh. Garba Mubi.  Dr Adamu Maina - Waziri was asked to wind up PTF.<br />
<br />
30. For two years, police and SSS interogated officials of Afri-Project Consortium,  project consultant to PTF.<br />
<br />
31. Up till today, no one charged or prosecuted. In fact two of d 
founders of Afri-Project Consortium later served in OBJ's govt.<br />
<br />
32. Murtala Aliyu was minister of state for works, and Amina Mohammed 
served as SSA on the MDGs and is now an adviser to the UN Sec-Gen.</div>

33. However, anytime @ThisIsBuhari is planning to contest some people dredge up allegations of sectionalism and fraud in PTF.<br />
<br />
34. Sometimes it is claimed that no one prosecuted so as not to 
embarrass @ThisIsBuhari. But what does that say about those making d 
claims?<br />

                  Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, scored the President
 Goodluck Jonathan administration very low and urged Nigerians to vote 
it out in the next general elections.<br />

Fashola stated that change of leadership is expedient at the national
 level because Nigeria is too important both globally and continentally 
to be left in the hands of those who “play politics with the lives of 
her citizens.”<br />

counterparts at their respective Club Houses in Onikan, Lagos on 
Wednesday, Governor Fashola said the national government, formed by the 
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has failed to provide its most important
 responsibility, which according to him, is the security of life and 
property of citizens and protection of the territorial integrity of the 
nation.<br /><br />
The Governor, who noted that Nigerians handed over a whole country to
 the ruling party in 2011, expressed regrets that the same party is now 
returning to Nigerians to ask for another leadership mandate with only 
part of the country, having lost some parts to insurgents.<br /><br />
“They are returning now to ask for our votes with only a part of the 
country that we gave them because some parts of the country have been 
lost to people we didn’t elect. So, in that most important 
responsibility, they have dropped the ball.”<br /><br />
Governor Fashola, who expressed dismay that the PDP has politicized 
everything, noted that nothing is too much for the party to sloganize 
about.<br /><br />
He accused the federal government of playing politics with the very 
sensitive issue of the more than 200 abducted secondary school girls in 
Chibok in Borno State.<br /><br />
The Governor also said that the PDP-controlled Federal Government has
 also orchestrated about how it made the country “the biggest economy in
 Africa”, wondering why smaller economies could provide electricity for 
their people while the self acclaimed “biggest economy” could keep her 
people in darkness.<br />

“Please ask them why smaller economies could get petrol easily for 
their people and why we have to queue for hours and days to get petrol 
in a biggest economy in Africa,” the Governor said.<br />

He also wondered why the so-called biggest economy in Africa is trying to buy arms from a smaller economy to secure the country.<br /><br />
He pointed out that the nation’s currency, the Naira, is now trading 
for N180 per Dollar while the South African Rand is trading at R11 to 
one United States Dollar.<br /><br />
According to Fashola, what matters is the quality of the life and 
prosperity of the citizens and not the size or number being bandied by 
the PDP-led government.<br /><br />
Governor Fashola tasked the people to figure out the last time the 
President went to present the Annual Budget in the National Assembly, an
 obligation which, according to him, is a constitutional one.<br /><br />
The Governor also said that the Federal Government also played 
politics with the Ebola Virus Disease containment as it almost turned 
the very grave situation into a political trophy.<br />

Conversely, Governor Fashola said, the All Progressives Congress 
controlled Lagos State Government has done well at many fronts including
 the Education, Security, Power and the financial sector in spite of the
 very precarious economic and security situation in the country.</div>

Imo State Governor , Rochas Okorocha has assured Nigerians that the 
all Progressive Congress ( APC ) Presidential candidate, Muhammadu 
Buhari, will stop the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northern parts of the

Okorocha who lost to Buhari in the keenly contested APC presidential 
primary election, stated that the former Head of State has the capacity,
 more than any other Nigerian to tackle the current insecurity ravaging

<br /> Civil servants and teachers in Ekiti State agitating for the payment 
of their outstanding September salaries got a piece of bad news from the
 state chief executive on Friday.<br /><br />
Governor Ayo Fayose told them to forget the payment of the salary at least for now.<br />

The governor who disclosed his decision while featuring on his 
monthly media chat, “Meet Your Governor”, said the precarious financial 
situation of the state would not allow him to pay workers September 
salaries.<br />

Fayose also revealed that governors of Jigawa, Adamawa and Katsina 
States sent rams and cows to him as part of their contributions to his 
“stomach infrastructure” agenda for Christmas celebrations.<br />

He explained that he took the step in his desire to make Ekiti people
 happy and ensure that they do not go hungry during the festive season.<br /><br />
While urging workers in the state to exercise patient with his 
administration, Fayose emphasized that the financial position of the 
state is so bad to the extent that he had reached an agreement with some
 banks to give the state what he called “financial leeway” for six 
months to enable him pay salaries.<br /><br />
The governor explained that the deductions from the allocation of the
 state from the Bond sourced by the last administration and commercial 
loans obtained from banks had adversely affected the state finances.<br />

Fayose pointedly told civil servants, teachers and other government 
workers to stop complaining and adjust themselves to the prevailing 
realities maintaining that he would not be deceiving them on issues 
affecting governance.<br /><br />
He said, “I became governor on October 16 and that is two months and 
ten days now and I want to state categorically that I have managed 
resources of the state very well.<br /><br />
“Now coming here to tell the people that I will pay September 
salaries, no, no, I will not say that. The salaries I am paying now, I 
had interface with banks to give me leeway for six months to be able to 
arrange myself, “Fayose declared</div>
