10 People You Will Meet In A "Danfo" Bus

One day, we'll travel to Abuja by train [LOS-ABV]. And I'll get to write
 a travelogue. But until then, enjoy this piece on some interesting 
people I see (meet) whenever I travel by Danfo [those yellow buses], 
around Lagos:<br />
<br />
1. The co-driver: In a Danfo bus, you'll normally 
find a driver, bus conductor and other passengers. Among these other 
passengers is a co-driver i.e. a self acclaimed one. You'll often hear 
him from the back seats giving orders to the driver on where to follow, 
how to step on <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD6">the brake</span>, how to swerve onto a new lane etc. And the 
driver most often respond: "Na you dey drive?" Or "You wan collect 
steering for my hand?"<br /><br />2. Red Alert: Imagine yourself inside a 
danfo bus and the driver is <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD10">running on</span> what seems like a top speed. Then
 all of a sudden you hear a voice break into your chain of thoughts. 
More like a scream: "Ahn ahn, driver you wan kill us?" Or "Driver please
 take it easy o. I never marry." Sometimes the co-driver doubles as a 
"red alert". Other times another passenger plays that role. The main 
goal is to caution the driver so that we can all arrive safely.<br /><br />3.
 Preacher man: Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand. With the 
preacherman in your bus, you can barely hear yourself think. Forget 
about receiving calls in that bus. If you do, you will hear the person 
on the other line asking, "are you in church?". The good thing about a 
preacherman in your danfo bus is that you get reminded that heaven and 
hell is real. "If we all die now, where will you go? Heaven or hell?" 
Some passengers stare at him in anger. Why should you say if we all die 
now? Yes, of course we want to make Heaven. No we won't die in this 
danfo bus.<br /><br />4. The pervert: One day I was in a danfo bus and I 
heard a woman say in a loud voice "if you try that again I will slap 
you." She was referring to the young man sitting beside her. The story 
was that the man was rubbing his elbow against her bosom. You can't 
really tell who is rubbing what because some of these buses are usually 
so jam-packed. The best thing is to position yourself well. But if you 
are unlucky you might fall victim of false accusation, this time a 
reversed psychology- one day, an older man pissed at the way a woman was
 protecting her frontage bluntly asked, "who wan touch your bosom?" 
According to him, he has more than that at home. Silence.<br /><br />5. "Do 
you know who I am": This man or woman tells us in a danfo bus that he or
 she is a very important person so the bus conductor must not argue with
 him/her over N10 change. Enough said.<br /><br />6. Political analyst: If 
you missed the news last night, and you have a political analyst riding 
the same danfo bus with you, may God bless your day. All is cool until 
he gets another politically conscious passenger to engage in the 
discourse. Sometimes their analysis is a comic relief. Other times 
depressing. Depending on the topic in focus. An elderly analyst tells 
the younger folks in the bus about the good old days. And the danger of 
having a "young" inexperienced president rule Nigeria.<br /><br />7. GSM 
users: Sometimes, you enter a bus and everyone, well almost everyone, is
 on their mobile phone making calls. The one screaming at <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD5">the top</span> of his
 voice...<br /><br />8. Sleep-attack: How do people sleep through the 
journey? In the danfo bus? On the bumpy Lagos road? Forget it. You don't
 know what their story is about. Body no be wood o.<br /><br />9. Networker: The guy tells you that you have beautiful brown eyes and soberly shares his story. What is yours? Blank stare.<br /><br />10.
 Tribalism: If war breaks out in Lagos, it might start from a danfo bus.
 One minute you enter a danfo bus and <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD3">you see</span> us all sandwiched in the 
air-tight yellow buses and you sigh in relief. The next, you hear an 
argument from the back row and the next thing, someone is yelling, 
throwing verbal punches at a particular tribe. End of story.<br /><br />These are my first ten. There are more categories to meet.<br /><br />It is no longer news that I love public <span class="IL_AD" id="IL_AD2">transport</span>. If you want to really see Lagos, ride the danfo but bring your change.<br /><br />Picture:

Research-- Ebola May Hit 15 More Countries

It was gathered that the study compared historic outbreaks to the 
virus’ possible transmission in bats and chimpanzees to predict how the 
disease could spread through its vast animal reservoir.<br />
According to reports, it is the first time scientists have attempted 
to explain how the virus, which is contracted through contact with 
infected bodily fluids, has travelled westward across Africa.<br />

The resulting map shows how the populations of the Central African 
Republic, Cameroon, Ghana and a dozen more countries could be hit by the
 outbreak, which has already killed nearly 2,300 people in 2014, 
according to latest estimates released on Tuesday, 9 September, 2014 by 
the World Health Organisation, WHO.<br /><br />
Earlier studies on the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, have revealed that 
several species of bat are suspected of carrying the virus through the 
jungles of West and Central Africa without showing symptoms, passing the
 disease onto other animals which are eaten by some communities as “bush
 meat”.<br />

Researchers said transmission to the human population was not 
“inevitable”, but that environmental factors in many more countries than
 previously considered made it possible for further Ebola outbreak 
outbreaks.<br />

<br />

According to the latest research conducted by the University of 
Oxford, Cote D’Ivoire, Gabon, Angola, Tanzania, Togo, Ethiopia, 
Mozambique, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar and Malawi could also
 join those countries already affected.<br /><br />
More than 1,000 people have so far died in Liberia, where the 
country’s Defence Minister Brownie Samukai has said the disease 
threatens the country’s very existence.<br />

to its national existence. The deadly Ebola virus has caused a

Boko Haram Allegedly Agree To Swap 30 Chibok Girls For 18 Commanders

<strong>Boko Haram are reportedly ready to release some of the 
abducted Chibok girls following a secret negotiation with the group 
commander.</strong><br />

According to The Nation, they want to exchange the female students 
kidnapped in April for 18 key sect members currently in detention.<br />
<br />

Some disagreements appeared last night however as the Nigerian 
authorities wanted Boko Haram to release all the 219 girls missing for 
almost 5 months, while the latter agreed to free only 30.<br />

It has been gathered from the sources that the group directed a list 
of its commanders and the names of students to be swapped to the Civil 
Rights Congress President, Comrade Shehu Sani.<br />

The emergence of swap possibility is believed to have appeared after 
there were held secret talks between a government delegation and a Boko 
Haram commander identified as Umar, who is being detained in Kuje Prison
 in Abuja.<br />

The source was quoted saying:<br />

<em>“Some top officials met with Umar about two weeks ago in Kuje 
Prison to discuss issues connected to the fate of the Chibok girls. We 
heard some inmates sharing this information that the sect might swap the
 girls with Umar and others. But all the details are still secret 
because Umar keeps to himself a lot.”</em><br />

Another source claimed the negotiations had been successful adding that the sides had agreed on the deal.<br />

<em>“The delegation had a fruitful negotiation with Umar, who is one 
of the highly-rated commanders of Boko Haram. The group assured Umar of a
 swap and he has been looking forward to it. The sect has given a list 
of 18 of its members to be swapped with the abducted Chibok girls.”</em><br />

Some security operatives have allegedly warned the government that 
the release of 30 girls was a dangerous move when there was “no full 
assurance that all the girls will be released”.<br />

One of the sources said:<br />

<em>“So, technically, the release of 30 girls was unacceptable to the government based on the advice of some security agents.”</em><br />

However another source added:<br />

<em>“You can see why Nigerians should stop blaming Boko Haram from 
continuously keeping these girls in captivity. What is of concern now is
 to get even these 30 girls out to prove to the whole world that they 
are alive.”</em><br />

Sani when contacted refused to provide any comment on the issue last night.<br />

It would be recalled that Sani, who has experience of direct negotiations with Boko Haram, shortly after the abduction predicted that the insurgents might use the girls as means of releasing their comrades-prisoners rather than kill the hostages.<br />

Soon the militants’ leader Abubakar Shekau released the video showing the students and provided the option to swap the girls for Boko Haram prisoners. Sani was among those who urged the authorities to accept the deal.

The “swap” saga was surrounded by numerous controversies, with some sources saying that the government made a U-turn when the deal was close to being secured and other sources insisted that the deal was stopped by the insurgents.<br />

<br />
More than 200 female students were abducted on April 14. Despite the 
interference on international powers, human rights activists, military 
forces and social campaigners, the majority of the girls are still 
missing.<br />

The Australian had accused  former Borno Governor, Modu Sheriff and 
the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika as 
Boko Haram sponsors.<br />

Well a new name has been added to the suspect funders list, and that is Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima.<br />

This piece of information was made available through a report by 
Magazine, “Power Steering,” it said Governor Shettima is behind the 
killing of late Alhaji Awana Ngala, former ANPP chairman in Borno State 
and Engr. Modu Fannami Gubio, the gubernatorial candidate of the ANPP.<br />

It is said that Engr. Modu Fannami Gubio was expected to succeed Modu
 Sheriff in the 2011 general election but was killed one week before his
 appointment.<br />

Power Steeering reveals that they had a secret conversation with one Mustapha Kolo, who is a detained Boko Haram member.<br />
Kolo goes on to reveal to the publication that there exists a 
relationship between the sect and the Borno State governor right from 
his time as a commissioner.<br />

<br />

Kolo went further and added that Shettima himself has been funding 
the sect and even had meetings with Boko Haram leaders to discuss 
further assasination of some prominent Borno citizens and politicians, 
who did not share his own political ideas.<br />

<br />

In Kolo’s words:<em>“When he (Shettima) was Commissioner, he used to give us plenty money. </em><br />

<em>He even gave us money to kill Fannami Gubio, so he can become 
governor, but he did not complete his payment; we were following him, he
 didn’t give us again”.</em> He said.<br />

<br />

Boko Haram has been a troublesome disease in Nigeria’s Northeast since 2009.<br />

They have bombed schools and places of worship and killed over 5000 Nigerian including kidnappings also.<br />

Australian Negotiator, Mr Davies had made news recently when he 
revealed he managed to talk to the sect leaders and found out who funded

<strong>More Nigerians are coming out to condemn President Goodluck Jonathan over the <em>#BringBackGoodluck2015</em> printed by his supporters on large banners and posted around Abuja for his 2015 re-election campaign.</strong><br />

Among the latest persons to lambast the president on the issue is the
 convener of the #BringBackOurGirls group, Obiageli Ezekwesili.<br />

The former Nigeria’s Education Ministe lambasted the presidency over its claim that President Jonathan was unaware the famous <em>#BringBackOurGirls</em> hashtag had been modified for his re-election bid.<br />

It would be recalled that Jonathan on Wednesday, 10 September, 2014, ordered the removal of the <em>#BringBackGoodluck2015</em> printed by his supporters on large banners and posted around Abuja for days.<br />

Premium Times reports that Jonathan gave the directive after 
the banners had drawn widespread condemnation from Nigerians home and 
abroad.<br />

President Jonathan called the posts ‘<em>repugnant’</em>, according to a statement released by Reuben Abati, a presidential spokesperson.<br />

Abati claimed the president was unaware of the hashtags for the days 
they circulated on social media, and even after they appeared on banners
 printed by his supporters.<br />

According to Premium Times, the mock hashtag may have been generated by another presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe.<br />

It informed that Okupe was one of the first persons to tweet the hashtag.<br />

Reacting on the issue on her official Tweeter account,  Ezekwesili accused both Abati and Okupe of <em>“deceit”</em> and <em>“incompetence”</em>.<br />

<em>“The inhumanity of that hashtag was too much for one to bear and 
so steadfastly ignored it…But this DECEIT by@abati1990 cannot be 
ignored,”</em>  Ezekwesili tweeted.<br />

The former minister called the presidential aides “liars and duplicitous beings” in her other tweets.<br />

<em>“LIARS and Duplicitous beings. @abati1990: President Jonathan orders removal of offensive Bring Back Jonathan Signs ,”</em> she said.<br />

Ezekwesili accused Abati of incompetence in his effort to dissociate the hashtag likely created by Okupe.<br />

<em>“Also incompetent, @abati1990 dissociating the Presidency from a 
hashtag that was GLEEFULLY CREATED by the President’s spokesman 
@doyinokupe,”</em> she said.<br />

Also commenting on the matter, the Head, Human Rights Writers 
Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, 
urged President Jonathan to investigate and discipline whoever used the <em>#BringBackGoodluck2015 </em>hashtag for his re-election campaign.<br />

<em>“The president should go a step further to investigate who 
generated that hashtag, it was highly irresponsible, he should order for
 a probe so that next time other people will not do same,”</em> he said.<br />

The Executive Director, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability 
Project, SERAP, Mumuni Tokunbo, said it was illegal for any group to 
have started such political campaign especially when the Independent 
National Electoral Commission, INEC, has not authorised political 
campaigns.<br />

<em>“The campaign for any election must commence legally upon the declarations of INEC, nobody is expected to jump the gun,”</em> Mr. Tokunbo said.<br />

It would be recalled that the <em>#BringBackOurGirls</em> hashtag was generated by a Nigerian lawyer, Ibrahim Abdullahi, after the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls from their dormitory in Chibok, Borno on 14 April, 2014 by the Boko Haram insurgents.<br />

The hashtag drew massive international attention to the fate of the 
girls even though some of them are yet to regain their freedom from

<strong>Governor Rabi’u Kwanwaso of Kano State said the former EFCC 
chairman, Nuhu Ribadu has been made a laughing stock by the Peoples’ 
Democratic Party (PDP) who dropped him from the Adamawa gubernatorial 
race.</strong><br />

<strong> </strong>The governor stated this yesterday, September 10, at the Government 
House in Kano while receiving merit awards from two NGOs namely, APC 
Kwankwasiyya Amana, Bauchi state chapter and Nigeria 774 Kwankwasiyya 
Merger: Kwankwaso for President, Leadership reports.<br />

Ribadu who recently defected from the APC and seven other governorship aspirants stepped down last week from the race for the gubernatorial ticket, under the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).<br />

Kwankwaso said: “<em>After he left the APC for the PDP, his new party
 did not find him worthy of its gubernatorial ticket. I am sure the PDP 
stakeholders in Adamawa are now laughing at him. We sympathise with him</em>”.<br />
According to him, the Adamawa state PDP chose a candidate whom most 
of their supporters see as incompetent, while pointing out that APC had 
come up with a credible candidate in person of Senator Muhammad Jibrila 
Bindaw who can rule the state.<br />

He therefore appealed to the people to think wisely in the 
forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state, dump the PDP which 
caused hardship within the 5-years they’ve been in power and vote for 
the APC which is ready to bring about positive and realistic changes in 
the whole country.<br />

The Adamawa governorship election is about a month away and the political parties are gearing up for the competition.<br />

The PDP held its primaries last week and the Adamawa State acting governor,
 clinching 624 votes during Saturday election in Yola, thereby becoming 
PDP candidate for the October 11 governorship election in the state.<br />

Meanwhile, a serving Senator, Bindo Jibrilla won the APC primaries, polling 2,718 votes.<br />

The Independent National Electoral Commission scheduled the Adamawa election for October 11, 2014, after the former governor Murtala Nyako, was removed from his offic<strong>e</strong> on July 15, 2014, by the state House of Assembly.<br />

Nigerians Comment On Adeboye Obasanjo Being Shot

The aide to the injured Adeboye Obasanjo’s father Olusegun Obasanjo, 
Mohammed Keffi, has granted an interview to the BBC Hausa 
service. According to Mr. Keffi, Obasanjo said his son’s team <em>“had left Mubi on their Michika when they came under fire from Boko Haram.</em>” <span lang="EN-US">Adeboye Obasanjo, an army engineer, was shot and injured, but is now in a stable condition – <em>“getting better,”</em> Mr. Keffi said.</span>
 Dozens of Nigerian army soldiers, according to SaharaReporters who 
first broke the news, lost their lives in the ensuing battle.<br />

As always, Nigerians have taken to their preferred social media platforms to <strong>post their reactions</strong> to the develpoment. Many noted that, if not for the involvement of the <strong>famous Nigerian family name</strong>, the story wouldn’t even made it to the news. Some went as far as implying that <strong>Adeboye Obasanjo paid for his father’s “sins”</strong>.<br />

<em style="color: #414141;">“This is not supposed to be a big news. 
Does he have two heads? Other officers higher than him in rank has 
fallen and no headlines was made. His father killed Biafrans. The real 
punishment is yet to come,” </em>one responded warned.<br />

death of another. It means there was no intention to kill but the 
killing is unlawful. The court has adjourned for early lunch.
