The <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_14">mother</span> of a 3year <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_12">old boy</span> identified as <b>Timothy</b> who was born without a <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_1">p*nis</span> has called on the Nigerian police to help her investigate and locate a woman identified as <b>Blessing Usatu</b> who she claims eloped with the <b>N5million</b> that was raised for <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_2">surgery</span> for her son.<br />
Narrating what happened to journalist at the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, 38 year old <b>Mrs <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_18">Charity</span> Atoe</b> said <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_8">after giving birth</span> to her son and discovering that he had no p*nis, she was informed by the <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_4">doctors</span> at the University of Benin Teaching <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_3">Hospital</span> that a corrective surgery which would cost N900, 000 would have to be  carried out in order for him to have a p*nis. <b>Mrs Atoe</b> said efforts on her part to raise the required <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_5">money</span> for her son’s surgery failed, with the boy’s father who is a bricklayer abandoning her and her sick young son to their fate.<br />

She said she was advised to proceed to Lagos in search of <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_6">financial assistance</span> for her son’s surgery and that it was while she was on her way to <b>T.B Joshua’</b>s church she met with <b>Blessing Usatu</b> who promised to help her call journalist who would make her son’s plight public.<br />

“My husband ran away after he has spent <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_9">lots of money</span> on his condition. He is a <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_7">bricklayer</span> and I used to sell. I have children for two husbands. Two girls for  another man and two boys for this man that ran away. I have not seen my  husband for the past eight months.<br />

I have been to several places and no help came. I have been looking  for help for the past three years. After looking for help in Benin  without any forthcoming. I decided to go to TB Joshua church. On my way,  <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_11">somebody said</span> I should go to Redeemed Church. It was where I was to buy sachet water to drink that I met one woman by name <b>Blessing Usatu.</b><br />

She promised to help me and within few minutes I saw pressmen asking  me questions and the report was published the next day alongside my  photographs. After two days, I started receiving calls from individuals  across the world stating that they have <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_10">paid money</span> into an account provided alongside the story.<br />
<br />
I did not know that the account was in her name. She has a <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_15">store</span> at Ikeja opposite the Redeem church. We went to the hospital at Lagos and<b> Dr. Bankole</b> asked her to give me the money to go and do the operation in Benin but she <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_17">refused</span>.  I used to sleep at Ijesha outside The Lord Chosen Church. Somebody  brought N600,000 cash which I saw. I was given N100,000 and the woman  said she would keep the rest.<br />
<br />
I later gave her <b>N80,000</b> out of the <b>N100,000.</b> Whenever I am going for check-up, she would give me N2000. She said I  should go and call my husband before she will give me the money.<br />
<br />
I went to the Zenith <span class="fo3x9" id="fo3x9_16">bank</span>  and the bank officials said my picture was not in the account. I really  need help. I do not know that the woman was out to dupe me. I have been  calling her and her number is not connecting.” she said</div>

He also  told me he was living in a three-bedroom flat, unknown to me that the  one-room apartment he inhabited with his elder brother belonged to the  latter. When I arrived last Monday, he asked me to follow him to take up  an employment. When we got there, he snatched a woman’s car with  pistol. I was surprised. When I asked him if robbery was the work he  found for me, he said “yes,” assuring that very soon, I would be  counting millions of naira. The mistake I made was that I still entered  the snatched car. I should have left them because I was standing at a  very good distance. But I feared that people at the scene might later  lynch me if I did not follow them.”<br /><a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7919906397202693774" name="more"></a></blockquote>Morgan and the other gang members - Suleiman  Abdullahi, 23, from Bida, Niger State; Samson Oyebanji, 23, from Oro in  Kwara State and John Oche, 26, his brother, were arrested following a  tip off.<br /><br />According to the police, the gang had on Saturday night August 2nd snatched  a Honda car belonging to one woman at Gbagada General Hospital  Junction, Gbagada, Lagos and afterwards drove the car to an estate in  Okota Isolo area. <br /><br />The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okota Isolo Police Station,  CSP Adamu Ibrahim got wind of their presence in his territory and he  immediately mobilized his men to trace them. On sighting the police men,  the robbers sped off towards the Ire-Akari Estate, parked the car and  took to their heels.<br /><br />They were all eventually arrested at different locations  in and outside the estate.<br /><br />Oche, the brother to Morgan and a commercial driver who runs the  Oshodi-Ajah route said his brother was lying, saying Morgan was a big  criminal who ran to Lagos after committing a crime in Otukpo Benue  state.<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">“My role was to drive the snatched car out of the robbery scene.  My brother (Morgan) is a big liar. I did not invite him to Lagos. The patients were told that this  treatment had never been tried before in a human being but had shown  promise in small experiments with monkeys.<br /> </blockquote><br /><blockquote>According to company documents, four monkeys infected with Ebola  survived after being given the therapy within 24 hours after infection.  Two of four other monkeys that started therapy within 48 hours after  infection also survived. One monkey that was not treated died within  five days of exposure to the virus.<br /> </blockquote><br /><blockquote>Brantly and Writebol were aware of the risk of taking a new, little  understood treatment and gave informed consent, according to two sources  familiar with the care of the missionary workers. In the monkeys, the  experimental serum had been given within 48 hours of infection. Brantly  didn’t receive it until he’d been sick for nine days.<br /> </blockquote><br /><blockquote>The medicine is a three-mouse monoclonal antibody, meaning that mice  were exposed to fragments of the Ebola virus and then the antibodies  generated within the mice’s blood were harvested to create the medicine.  It works by preventing the virus from entering and infecting new cells.<br /> </blockquote><br /><blockquote>The Ebola virus causes viral hemorrhagic fever, which refers to a  group of viruses that affect multiple organ systems in the body and are  often accompanied by bleeding.<br /> Early symptoms include sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain,  headaches and a sore throat. They later progress to vomiting, diarrhea,  impaired kidney and liver function — and sometimes internal and external  bleeding.<br /> </blockquote><br /><blockquote>The ZMapp vials reached the hospital in Liberia where Brantly and  Writebol were being treated Thursday morning. Doctors were instructed to  allow the serum to thaw naturally without any additional heat. "<span style="color: #cc0000;">We  want to be able to practise our profession with pride like every other  person. We want an end to name-calling and stigmatisation. We are s<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">*</span>x workers and not asawo</span> [a Yoruba name for prostitutes]."<br /><br />S<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">*</span>x work, said Patoo, is normal work and that there are "s<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">*</span>x  workers everywhere under one form of disguise or the other".  "government should stop criminalising our work," said the woman who is  also the president of the Women of Power Initiative (WOPI), a  non-governmental organisation established to advance the cause of s<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">*</span>x work in Nigeria.<br /><br />Although Nigeria has posted impressive economic growth, overtaking South  Africa to become Africa's largest economy, unemployment remains  widespread and many Nigerian women have ended up working as prostitutes  in part because they cannot find work.<br /><br />Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said in April that no fewer than  5.3 million youths are jobless, and the World Bank last year put the  number of Nigerians living in destitution at 100 million. <br /><br /><b>Sister's advice</b>  <br />With large earrings and a face flamboyantly made up, Patoo sat in her  busy office, which she shares with another organisation, and told Al  Jazeera how she took the advice of her sister, a former prostitut<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span>, when life as a single parent became too tough for her.</div><div><br />Though reluctant then, she now sees it as any other business and has no  regrets. "Just as you are proud of your profession, that is how I am  proud of mine. Just as you are respected for being a journalist, that is  how I want to be respected," said Patoo.<br /><br />Abraham uses the pseudonym "Patoo" in her daily work - a name she chose to hide her identity when she began work as a prostitut<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span>.<br /><br /><span style="color: #cc0000;">She said her two children - a son and a daughter - are at university and she pays tuition fees for them</span>. They do not know her occupation, she said, although she marched on the streets of Lagos for all to see.<br /><br />In this oil-rich country of more than 160 million people ravaged by  poverty and deprivation, Abraham's work seems lucrative. But Abraham and  other women in this business still have the authorities and people to  contend with.<br /><br />One of the prostitutes who identified herself only as Janet, spoke of  how police arrest them indiscriminately, raiding their brothel even when  they are with their clients.</div><div><br />"<span style="color: #cc0000;">Sometimes, after reluctantly paying for  our services, they [the police] arrest us and take us to the station and  ask us to bail ourselves with the same amount they paid us, thereby  recovering their money</span>," Janet said.</div><div><br />"Some of us sustain serious injuries when our customers beat us up and there is no one to protect us."<br /><br />Other women raise even more serious complaints. Outspoken and  HIV-positive, 35-year-old Ayide, the only name she gave in order to be  quoted, attended one of the rallies and said it is not only the police  to blame.</div><div><br />"When we talk about police, we are pointing accusing fingers at only one  group. The fact is that all the uniformed men, especially the mobile  police [paramilitary arm of the police], are oppressing us. They use  their uniform to harass us. They extort money from us, beat us and rap<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">*</span> us," she said.</div><div><br />Patoo corroborated the claims of Janet and Ayide, saying that people who  stigmatised them and the security agents who harassed them were a  serious problem.</div><div><br />"People call us names but the funny thing is that they don't even know  if their wives, sisters or daughters are one of us," she said in-between  laughter.</div><div><br />"If I don't tell you that I am a s<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">*</span>x  worker, you won’t know unless you see me here. Most of us are working  as nurses in big hospitals, some are bankers and even students, but you  won’t know."<br /><br /><b>Raids on brothels</b><br />Philip Eze, the police officer in charge of Elere Police Division, Lagos, explained that the police would not arrest prostitut<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span>s were it not for the country's criminal code outlawing prostitution.</div><div><br />"In the Nigerian criminal code, if somebody is soliciting for men, it is  against the law and vice versa. The law does not cause confusions; we  are the ones causing confusion in the name of the law. <span style="color: #cc0000;">I don't care if they have a world association, it is illegal in Nigeria and their assembly is illegal too</span>," Eze said.</div><div><br />Responding to allegations of extortion, s<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span>xual harassment, and rap<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span> by police, Eze said victims should report such cases and the offenders would be prosecuted.</div><div><br />"Even though they are prostitut<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span>s, they have every right to report rap<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span> and other human right abuses," he told Al Jazeera.</div><div><br /><b>Meanwhile, the fight between prostitut</b><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;"><b>é</b></span><b>s and the authorities continue.</b></div><div>Police occasionally raid brothels in Lagos and make sweeping arrests in  red light areas like Kofo Abayomi, Victoria Island, Isaac John Street,  and Allen Avenue. </div><div></div><div>Some of the lucky prostitut<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span>s  end up in police cells where they are interrogated and eventually  released on bail. Others end up serving jail terms of three to four  months without an option of paying a fine after being charged for  loitering, public indecency or disorderly conduct or engaging in acts  inimical to the public good.</div><div><br />To stage the protest to mark International S<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">*</span>x  Workers Rights Day 2014 without a clash with the authorities, the  prostitutes outsmarted the police, obtaining a permit under the auspices  of WOPI.</div><div><br />They took their demands to the authorities at Shomolu Local Government,  Lagos, where they were advised that legislators held the key to their  demand.</div><div><br /><b>Previous attempts by Nigerian lawmakers to have prostitution legalised were unsuccessful. </b></div><div>In 2011, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President of Nigeria,  called for the complete legalisation of prostitution, saying this would  enable the government to regulate the activities of prostitut<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">é</span>s.
