The aide to the injured Adeboye Obasanjo’s father Olusegun Obasanjo, Mohammed Keffi, has granted an interview to the BBC Hausa service. According to Mr. Keffi, Obasanjo said his son’s team “had left Mubi on their Michika when they came under fire from Boko Haram.Adeboye Obasanjo, an army engineer, was shot and injured, but is now in a stable condition – “getting better,” Mr. Keffi said. Dozens of Nigerian army soldiers, according to SaharaReporters who first broke the news, lost their lives in the ensuing battle.
As always, Nigerians have taken to their preferred social media platforms to post their reactions to the develpoment. Many noted that, if not for the involvement of the famous Nigerian family name, the story wouldn’t even made it to the news. Some went as far as implying that Adeboye Obasanjo paid for his father’s “sins”.
“This is not supposed to be a big news. Does he have two heads? Other officers higher than him in rank has fallen and no headlines was made. His father killed Biafrans. The real punishment is yet to come,” one responded warned.

Nanbam Yakubu, from Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos, said: Why will it be a breaking news? Is it because he [Adeboye Obasanjo] is the son of a former president? Of course, it is quite unfortunate. But please, next time try to consider the common innocent soldiers who are being killed daily by Boko Haram while trying to serve their fatherland. These people are equally important to their families and loved ones. I wish him quick recovery and may the soul of the departed rest in peace.” Others condemned the malevolent comments and offered their condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers: Oyelola Jesutofunmi Softie, from Osun State University, Osogbo, said: I don’t know why some people are saying ‘Good for him’ [for Adeboye Obasanjo]. Anyone wishing something evil to happen to a fellow human being is worse than Boko Haram! Heartless people. If such happened to your brother or son, would you say ‘Good for him’? Crazy fellows.” Emeka Egesi said: My sympathy goes to the families of the dead soldiers. They died while in active service to a disunited nation that doesn’t value its human resources, may their soul rest in peace!” Many social media commentators, however, expressed their respect to Adeboye Obasanjo, said he was a son worthy of his father’s name and merits, calling both father and son true partiotic Nigerians. Abdulrasaq Yahaya Eneji, from the National Open University of Nigeria, said: “All sensible people would appreciate Obasanjo for allowing his son [Adeboye Obasanjo] to serve Nigeria. Remember that some cowards hide their children somewhere while causing mayhem in our country.” Akhimien Matthew, from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, said: “For your information, many notable Nigerians are fighting Boko Haram. If OBJ’s son wasn’t shot, would you even know that he had a son who is an engineer in the army?”

Abdullahi Danladi Ibrahim, said: I wish the gallant officer [Adeboye Obasanjo] quick recovery. R.I.P. to the soldiers who lost their lives. Obj is a leader that led by example. The fact that his child was in the war front tells more about his love for the country. It is a motivation to soldiers. I would still vote for Obj for third term.”

Some Nigerians have expressed hope that, since the Boko Haram plague has touched upon the lives of prominent Nigerians (such as Lt Col Adeboye Obasanjo, son of Olusegun Obasanjo), this would prompt a fast solution to the insurgency in Nigeria. Abdulraheem Abdulrafiu Niyi: Well, if Boko Haram have started touching our leaders’ blood or relations, then hopefully they may start giving positive ideas on the ways out of these challenges. Who among the Chibok girls’ parents is a prominent person in Nigeria? Now let’s wait and see what happens. Will Obasanjo be happy seeing Boko Haram attempting to kill his son [Adeboye Obasanjo], like they kill poor masses mercilessly around the nation?”
