A MUST READ: An Open Letter To Mikel Obi

Dear Mikel,

I’ve just been looking at you… I’ve just sat down in this my corner and I’ve been looking at you and the rubbish that you played in this World Cup. God knows if I had told you what was on my mind before now, FIFA would have banned Nigeria from competitive football for at least 5 years.
Before the competition kicked off proper majority of Nigerians believed you would be key to the team’s chances, and if you had a good tournament the team would too. We had some concerns after the first few friendlies in which you played absolute rubbish, but optimistically waved your performances away chalking it down to the non-competitiveness of friendly games.

Oya the World Cup started and it was time to step up to the plate. Apparently you left your plate back on the bench at Chelsea where you have a designated spot complete with a power outlet to charge your phone while the games are played. Against Iran Nigerians cringed to watch you stroll round the midfield like you were the reigning World Footballer of the Year, losing the ball time and time again with your ‘big-man’ passes and over-exposing poor Ogenyi Onazi as you refused to help defend. Okay, maybe it’s because it’s Iran and Mikel will step up against Bosnia, we said. Wishful thinking. We suffered through another lethargic performance in which you were nearly invisible and we saw more of the linesmen than your otu Bottom.

Thank God for Osaze and Emenike, two of our standout performers at the competition for combining sweetly and bagging the goal that won the game for us. Their excellent performances overshadowed your disappointing showing. Osaze, a 32-year old player was running his lungs out that day while Mikel, reportedly 27 years old (although we know better) was walking about the middle of the park like he was at a picnic. We sha won that game without your contribution…

Argentina vs Nigeria. The BIG day! The game we qualified for the World Cup to play! On one hand, we had the MVP of the 2005 U-20 World Cup Leo Messi and on the other we had the MVP runner-up in the same competition, Mikel Obi. It was expected that both ‘stars’ would renew their rivalry and influence the game for both their sides…We all saw how the story played out… Messi was in supreme form, scoring two sweet goals while Mikel Obi turned in another anonymous, god-awful performance that must have had Jose Mourinho frantically working the phones to managers of lower-league sides, trying to sell his professional bench-warmer to any club dumb enough to take a gamble on him.

Three games, no Mikel Obi… Unlike 2005 where he and Taiye Taiwo (who was 3rd most valuable player) were old men bullying their juniors and forming stars, Mikel was competing in a tournament of his mates and was brutally exposed as a lazy player whose style of play was a big minus to his team. Remember that Messi is supposed to be your ‘mate’ o, but in terms of achievements he has completely dwarfed the hell out of you since your breakout tournament in 2005.

Want to know some of your other ‘mates’ at that tournament? Fernando Llorente, David Silva, Pablo Zabaleta, and Radamel Falcao. Can you compare yourself in terms of skill and global reputation with these players you broke out with? Have you watched them play for their National sides? Have you seen their passion and commitment to winning for their countries? Would you rate yourself at par with them?
Dear Mikel, as I kept watching you play rubbish I asked myself if you would put in the same performance if Mourinho was generous enough to field you. Would you remorselessly keep losing the ball like a secondary school player if you were playing at Chelsea, especially as there are more than 5 top players who can play in your position and keep you on the bench where you have been perpetually? Is it safe to think you believe you are doing Nigeria a favour by putting on the Green-White-Green? It is one thing to be an Ahmed Musa who is a frustrating player but gives his best (within the limits of his skill) and it is another to be a Mikel, an overhyped, frustratingly lethargic player who never seems to turn up when he is expected to. While your Bottom left a permanent imprint on the Chelsea bench last season a number of Nigerian football fans kept asking why Mourinho didn’t play you…Now we see clearly why, with you lack of forward movement and your penchant for only passing sideways. There’s really nothing special about you, nigga. If I compare your play to the lady who plays in your position for the Falcons, I’m 100% sure she contributes more to the team than you.

My advice to you? Get ready for a sale to Leeds or West Brom or Charlton, as those are the kind of teams Mourinho is probably going to flog you to. If you like when you get there continue playing your big man football and see where that gets you. And if you don’t want to play for Nigeria, you can be going. As sure as the PDP is going to rig the hell out of the 2015 General Elections, we will definitely find a better, more committed player to take over the position you are occupying so disdainfully. I don’t know if it’s because you have a misguided superiority complex that you will refuse to pass the ball and be shielding it like an ode when an opponent comes close to you. Even when you mercifully agree to pass, 3 out of 5 passes are either sideways or you lose the ball. Maybe you aren’t completely to blame…Stephen Keshi should have been brave enough to bench the hell out of you given your dead performances. You claim to be an experienced player, but didn’t have the good sense to drop to the ground and get the referee to send Giroud off for that elbow on you. If he had been sent off, maybe we would have killed off France with our numerical advantage (seeing as we had them on the ropes for most of the game without your help) and we woulda made the quarters. Defence you no get, Attack you no get, sense you no get. Rubbish.

I’m done, cuz…I’m done. Just feck off

Team work will see us through.”

The Super Eagles coach knows that individual game would not lead Nigeria anywhere going by the stars in most of the teams here. Many Nigerian players were not making the first team of their clubs before the World Cup. And to put them to shape, he needed time. We couldn’t do all the things we wanted to do. Osaze Odewengie played well in the eyes of many against Iran. Keshi did not dispute that. But he did not quite position himself in a particular way that could see him latch on rebounds, especially the drop nodding from Shola Ameobi. Each time the ball dropped, there was nobody to follow up. And that angered Keshi. But Osaze quickly understood and made up against Bosnia and Keshi is very happy with him and the entire team. Osaze’s goal earned Nigeria the sweet victory against Bosnia.
“Everything is about team work. I think that we will play well against Argentina. We hope to qualify and move on. I plead with Nigerians to always be patient. The way they wrote us off after the match against Iran was disturbing. With at least a draw against Argentina, Nigeria will qualify for the next round. “Everybody is happy in West Africa; Ghana got their result and we won. It’s good for the continent. Everybody is now happy. Don’t forget that Nigeria also had chances to have converted to win convincingly but in life there is element of luck in everything. Dzeko missed chances and their goal was disallowed also but we also created many chances.”

He said Safet Susic, Bosnia and Herzegovina coach reacting to his team’s loss described the encounter as an open game that had two teams desperate to win. “The match unfolded exactly the way I imagined. They had one and scored that goal.”

He said he knew Nigeria would be a tough team to crack but at the same time congratulate the Eagles. “I can only congratulate them. Now they are in second place in the group with great chances to progress.”

Brazil 2014: Can The Eagles Bring The Trophy Home?

Since the opening match of the 2014 world cup which saw Brazil beating Croatia hands down even with the own goal, and Netherlands unbelievably wiping Spain's butts with the 5-1 goals, different opinions, comments and reactions have been trailing the possibilities of our beloved Super Eagles bringing the World Cup home.

From the inception of the 2014 World Cup, the Eagles have received various moral support from many. While our president, Goodluck Jonathan encouraged them to bring the trophy home, the Senate president, David Mark has also charged the Super Eagles to operate with the "never-say-die" spirit typical of a Nigerian and go on to win the 2014 coveted World Cup in Brazil.

The head coach of the Eagles has told Nigerians not to use the friendlies to judge the performance of the Eagles as they have reserved all their energies for the main match and not mere friendlies.The most beautiful girl in Nigeria, Anna Banner has also shown support for the Super Eagles in her own little way while Mercy Ajisafe, an OAP, popularly known as omo London went ahead to strip down just to tease our Super Eagles to victory.

With these encouragements and more, Nigerians are still of the opinion that mixing up of home-based players with foreign ones at this last minute, not minding whether they blend well or not might be a huge mistake. Many young Nigerians think it is going to be a magic for the Super Eagles to bring the trophy home.
Some of these young football lovers were questioned by the Naij.com team on the possibility of the Super Eagles returning home with the cup. See their reactions below;

Mayowa Oduniyi

It is impossible for Nigeria to bring the 2014 World cup home. I am a christian and I know with God, nothing is impossible but this is football, you cannot use faith at all.

Sanni Taofeek Oladimeji

Nigerians should better wake up.That Super Eagles will bring the 2014 trophy home is future impossible tense.You are not even praying for them to get to the next round, you are talking about them bringing the trophy home.

Anonymous

It is pretty simple. Accurate preparation helps success. We all saw the matches so far...Do you think the Super Eagles are that prepared? We should not deceive ourselves with being sentimental. For Nigeria to win the game, it will be a great miracle.

If someone has had huge and a floating expectation from the Eagles..with the above reactions and comments, it is sure the expectations will be deflated by now.
Do you have a different opinion from the above, or do you completely agree? Countries That Allow Or Forbid Their Players To Have S*x During World Cup

While World Cup fans enjoy watching their favorite teams on the soccer field, they stay oblivious about what players do in between games.

There are certain nations that either allow their teams to be engaged in s*xual activity or completely ban to hop in bed with whomever they want during the World Cup.

So which hot soccer studs can get it on while heating up Brazil?

Countries That Allow Their Teams to Engage in S*x: Germany, Spain, USA, Australia, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Uruguay and England

Countries That Completely Ban S*x: Russia, Chile, Mexico, and Bosnia and Herzegovina

However, the World Cup s*x rules aren't black-and-white. For some nations' teams, it's complicated.
For example, French players can only have s*x if it doesn't last all night (if soccer stars have one thing it's stamina!), while the Nigerian team can have s*x if it's with their wives (sorry, no girlfriends). As for Brazil, a country known for hot bods, Brazilian players are allowed to get jiggy with it as long as it's not acrobatic (come again?).

Africa Can Win The World Cup In Brazil - Keshi

Coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi believes one of five African representatives at the ongoing 2014 World Cup in Brazil could end up winning the football showpiece.

Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria and Cote d'Ivoire are the five African countries in Brazil and all the teams are expected to face stiff competitions from the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Germany and others.
However, Keshi said his team's chances should not be underestimated.
Asked how close he felt Africa was to winning the Cup for the first time, he did not hesitate: "Very close.
"Because they (the African sides) are good. As good as any other teams that are here. I think this tournament is an open tournament. We just have to do what we have to do," he continued.

* Coach Stephen Keshi

It could be recalled that Ghana's Black Stars, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and Teranga Lions of Senegal are the only African sides that have been able to make it to the quarter final of the Mundial.
Nigeria has twice, 1994 and 1998, reached the second round while Cameroon made it to the quarterfinals in 1990 as did Senegal in 2002.

When asked to compare the current Super Eagles with his class of 20 years ago, Keshi said: "This team is growing, it's like a baby.

"This team is just a year and a half-old. The team of 1994 was almost five or six years old.
"In 1994, the spirit was very high, we didn't care where the (opposing) team was coming from, we knew we are going to go out there and win the game. Here, we're building that, we try to bring the same spirit.

* Super Eagles' players

"Once we get the spirit, trust me, it's going to be two times as strong as 1994."
Nigeria is scheduled to take on Iran at 8pm Nigerian time on Monday, 16 June, 2014.
