Findings showed that after Thursday’s stormy session, the PDP members immediately started making contacts on how to counter the impeachment moves. Members are pleading that this is not the right time.
The message was that any impeachment of the President would only worsen the situation of the country, “with obvious consequences for our democracy and all Nigerians.”
One source said, “This is just not the time to talk about impeachment. The PDP caucus will stop them; what we should be talking about is how to address the security situation in the country."
Investigations showed that though the APC lawmakers had long threatened that they would initiate impeachment proceedings against Jonathan if he made attempts to remove Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, they did not take the matter seriously until the police locked down the National Assembly on Thursday.
Punch gathered that the members considered the lock down an affront on the legislature and the office of the speaker, the number four citizen and a member of the leading opposition party, APC.
“It was a clear case of disregard for democratic values and the laws of the land. What did they want to achieve by locking the speaker and all those members out?
“The police did not only shut the gates of the assembly, they threw tear gas at the Speaker and members. That act was a total disgrace, taking place when there is a restraining order against any plan to stop the speaker from presiding over the House”, another source added.
