It would be recalled that Mbu came to national notoriety when he served as commissioner of police in Rivers State where he mobilized policemen under his control and tried unsuccessfully to remove the state Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who was then having a face-off with President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife.
Pro-democratic activists believed that Jonathan's wife, Patience, as well as Nyeson Wike, the minister of state for Education, instigated Mr. Mbu’s many clashes with Governor Amaechi.
Mbu was widely criticized for his political partisanship. After his transfer to FCT, he announced that he was banning all protest rallies in Abuja.
