<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">A Malaysian-Chinese, Mrs Odediran, an optometrist, is married to a retired Nigerian United Nations Children’s Fund United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) staff member.  </span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Read  her interesting interview with <span style="color: red;">Tribune</span>:</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Can  you let us into your background?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I’m  a Chinese  but grew up in Malaysia.  I’m from a non-Christian home but there was a small population of Christians   there. Most were   Buddhists, so there were  many temples where idols were worshipped. Buddhism is an ancient religion while Christianity was  regarded as Western religion. I lost my mother as a teenager, my father therefore took another wife. My father is a businessman  and   also runs  a big farm, so we were quite comfortable. He  spent his money mainly on educating us.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When did you get married?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">That was  January 16,  1988.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How did you meet your spouse?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I became a Christian when I went to  Australia   in 1981 for my A’Level studies.  In 1982,  I was in Brisbane, where I studied Optometry  while he studied  Public Health Engineering. We both belonged to Overseas Christian Fellowship (OCF) and  he was  the president. The fellowship held its convention at the time we were rounding  off our courses. We   were in the dining room and I wasn’t feeling fine, I therefore asked him for a pain reliever which he gave me. That was the first time we  held a close gaze. I felt a  strange feeling within me and his  thought didn’t leave me.  It was same with   him. He later  told me his mind but what   got him confused was the fact that  he was coming back to Nigeria  a week after. Since I have learnt to hear from God, I prayed and He gave me Psalm 112 as a confirmation and then I knew there was no going back. My profession was then  in great demand in  Brisbane. I therefore  got employed  immediately after graduating. We thus  got in touch  through mails and phone calls.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Didn’t you entertain any fear marrying someone outside your country and continent?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">God gave me   a word in Psalms 45 and   I held on to  this.  It was a lot of stress because I didn’t have the support  of  my family. My maternal grandmother on her part was concerned about the distance. The Bible was what gave me comfort.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How did your family   receive the news?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I wrote my dad and asked, ‘Is it okay or alright if I marry a non-Chinese and non-   white?’  I intentionally didn’t say African or Nigerian. He replied ‘Please consider very well.’  He later  sent my aunties to me in Brisbane to discourage me. My father was very authoritative. He later came, asked me to resign and   come back to our town,   Penang in Malaysia.  Back home, my   family members and relatives kept on  trying to persuade me to let go of  the relationship. They   made jest of   African   black skin and   said their lips were thick and they were hungry.   They referred to my white skin as milk and my husband as coffee. They also taunted me that no children of mine would look like me.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What effect did this have on your relationship?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">We were still getting in touch and my dad knew this. I sometimes spoke with him on the phone. My dad never stopped or scolded me. My father didn’t actually understand   English Language   and so didn’t understand what I was saying.  I came to Nigeria in 1987 to   pay him a visit.  I told everyone else  except my dad and stepmother. My husband was then staying at   1004 in   Lagos.  It was  during this  visit that  he has  got a job with the United Nations Children’s Fund United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), after working for  some  few years   with the Lagos State government. We decided to get married, and  so we  prayed   about it and  God gave us middle of January, precisely January 16  the following year, as our wedding date.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What was your husband’s family reaction to his choice of you?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">His father asked him if there was no other person  in Nigeria he could marry.  I met   some of his siblings  and we were cautious in  the way we related.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How did the wedding go?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">We had it in our home  church in Penang. None of my family members attended. My father bribed my  two sisters in New Zealand  with money so as not to attend. Only my aunty and her four children attended and she came  back the next day to the hotel where we stayed weeping that she was scolded by other family members.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How long did it take your dad in particular to come to terms with your choice of husband?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I was writing him to give him update about us though he never replied. Even while in Australia, he never replied my letters aside the one I wrote on the choice of my husband. I actually never   experienced  the love of a father.  Two years after our wedding, I  travelled  home and stayed in my uncle’s hotel. I   had our first child with me. My dad also came in to see my uncle. On sighting me, he  avoided me. Again, while on a visit to my sister in  Singapore, I tried to speak with him on phone but he hung up. In  December 1993  which was  our  daughter’s fifth  birthday,  the ice was finally broken.  He held a reception for us and invited relatives.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How did your spouse and father relate?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">They  shook hands  but couldn’t communicate because  as I said, my  father  didn’t   understand  English Language, but I remember that  my  husband helped  iron my father’s  shirts.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What were the things you found strange on getting   to Nigeria?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">We were then living in Ketu in Lagos  and the way people run after molue,  sell by the roadside,  irregular  power supply and having to carry buckets to fetch water  due to  lack of  water supply, the sandy paths and untarred  roads were somehow strange to me. But then, with the kind of upbringing I had, I  could adapt to any situation. Another is the family member issue. Being the first child, he had to bear the  responsibility of training his siblings and attend to some other needs or demands of his family.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Where is your spouse from?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Odeyinka in Osun State.  His mother is from Apomu also in Osun State.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Have you ever been to these places?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Yes. We pay them visits and even take the children along. We also go to Gbongan, Ipetumodu and Ikire.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How easy was it learning Yoruba language?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I picked quite a bit like greetings especially. My husband taught me how to greet.  I did my shopping at Mile 2 market.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How did you  interact with the traders?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">They call me their  husband (oko mi).  Some would help   bring the stuffs   to me so that I could  make my choice.  I remember a female trader got so  excited   during one of my shoppings  that she carried me and  swung  me around.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What things  did you find interesting?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Partying and blocking of roads. Nigerians do a lot of dancing. In Malaysia you don’t block the roads unless when  rituals are being carried out   during a  burial ceremony.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> What were the things you learnt to do?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I learnt to prepare amala, eba, egusi and okro soups, among others.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What about backing of babies?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> I didn’t do that because I’m not tall. Our help did that.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What is your favourite  Nigerian dish?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Moin moin and pap for breakfast and pounded yam with egusi soup for the other meals.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Can you pound yam?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I did it once but it was actually a little quantity. My husband later bought the pounding machine.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How will you describe a Nigerian man?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I won’t say a Nigerian man but a Christian man. Even though born again, some   men have not removed their Nigerian mentality of dealing with women. You shouldn’t treat your wife as a slave. It amazes me when  a man  or his wife  says ’my children’ or ‘my car’  and the like. In marriage, you  no longer say  ‘yours’ or  ‘mine’ but ‘ours’.  A man who has the understanding of what marriage entails runs his home in line with the Bible culture and I thank God that through the different   Christian trainings we have had, my husband understands this.  He protects me in many ways. For example,  If we are going to give his parents money, I sometimes  sign the  cheque.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What thrills you about your spouse?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">He’s   very caring and he displays   this nature   not only to his family members, but whoever comes his way.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What  other things did you discover about him?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">He can also be angry and when he is, he looks stern and   wears that cold face.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Where do both of  you  differ?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">He loves visiting  but   my life is a close-circuit one.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Do you consider your husband romantic?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">We are very free with each other; free to express ourselves   and make each other to laugh. We  are friends to each other.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What has made your marriage work till date?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Openness, commitment, trust, humility, joint decision—even if you don’t agree on an issue, you should exercise patience. But some husbands will say, ‘how can I listen to my wife?’ We pray together   on issues and  hear from God what steps to take.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Yours was a long distance relationship. Will you encourage your children to do same?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It wasn’t that easy, but then our case is different. We knew each other physically before he came back to Nigeria. But I object to internet friendship because it can be deceitful.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">To what  extent are your children exposed to the Nigerian lifestyle?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">They   know how to greet  in Yoruba language. When they were  young, they sometimes attended occasions in Yoruba traditional outfits.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Do you also attend socials in the traditional wears?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I don’t like iro and buba because you have to  tie  the wrapper round you. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Popular yoruba actor Yinka Quadri </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">has started a poultry business That Cost Him Over N20million. </span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In His recent interview with Encomium below:</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> What’s the latest from your stable right now? </span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I am working on another blockbuster, The Moon (Osupa).  And just as I have promised my fans that I won’t disappoint them, Osupa is going to be better than all the movies I have produced so far.  Also, I want to use this medium to appreciate all my fans for their support from inception till date.  If not them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.  Then, another project I just embarked upon has to do with poultry.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What informed going into poultry?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I just felt I should also support my country with what I have, and I thought going into poultry farming will serve that purpose.  It has also been on my mind to use what I am and what I have to benefit mankind and support Nigeria.  So, with that project, I believe if I commit the little I am able to get from my career as a theatre practitioner into poultry, I will be able to generate employment for some or few of the unemployed youths.  Even beyond that, it’s also going to benefit a lot of people in different ways.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Where is the farm?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It’s along Shagamu Road, Ikorodu, Lagos.  There is a place designated as poultry farm.  The farm was allocated by the state government for that purpose.  And as we all know, commercial and large scale poultry can’t be practiced in the main town, it has to be at the outskirts, where you will have spacious land.  That’s why I established it at that place.  I am also using this medium to solicit government support so that it can be bigger than what I really planned.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">How much have you spent so far on the project?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I have spent about N7m, and I am still spending.  That’s why I am in need of more funds to ensure the project is completed to my satisfaction.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">At 55, what are the things you feel you can’t do again going by the fact that you’re getting old now?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What I think I know how to do best is my job, which is acting.  I am still very agile and intelligent as usual.  If they invite me for roles in different locations, without writing them anywhere, I won’t forget the dates of my appointments with all the producers.  I still have a very sound memory.  And I don’t report late at any movie location.  So, the fact that I have clocked 55 has not changed anything in me.  I am still the same Yinka Quadri.  Even, if I am invited to a location in Ilorin, Kwara State, I will get there before the person that invites me. It’s not by my power, it’s God’s grace.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What would you say has been working for you?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Nothing but prayer.  You can ask anybody, I don’t have any hidden place.  Anybody that visits me is free to have access to my bedroom or anywhere in my house.  I have no skeleton in my cupboard.  I believe in prayer, and that has been working for me.  Almighty Allah that I worship has not disappointed me.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">What has been your greatest achievement so far?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">God has done a lot for me, not just one thing.  First, for keeping me alive is beyond human knowledge.  And all what God has been doing for me since I was born till when I became an actor in 1978 have been wonderful and marvelous. I have been rising from glory to glory.  Also, all my children are doing well. I can’t just finish listing all my achievements, and I must tell you all of them are great. That’s why I will forever be grateful to God.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">No doubt, God has blessed you abundantly, what more do you still expect from God?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It’s true that God has blessed me abundantly, but there is no how great or blessed a man is that he won’t still have what he wants from God.  As for me, it’s my poultry project that’s very paramount in my agenda right now.  I want God to help me complete it.  Initially, I thought it was a small thing but I discovered there was nothing small.  Everything is money, especially now that the economy itself doesn’t help matters.  I know God won’t disappoint me, for He has always been with me.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">You said you have spent about N7m on the poultry, how much are you really looking at to complete it?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I am looking at about N20m.  And I believe God will do it.  I won’t relent on my efforts as well.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">At 55, would you say you have taken any decision in the past that you regretted?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">No, nothing like that has happened.  If I take any decision, I will try and observe the situation for a while, and if the decision doesn’t bring any progress I will make u-turn before anybody tells me to.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When was your happiest moment?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">That’s whenever I see myself in my personal house which I built in Ikorodu, I always feel very happy. I feel happy and grateful to God because I am no longer paying rent.  Each time I even think of it, I say a big thank you to Almighty Allah.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">When was your saddest moment?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">That was when I lost my dad in 1994.  We just celebrated 20th years of his death. The five candidates were President Jonathan (PDP), Gen. Muhammad Buhari 
(APC), Speaker of the House of Reps Aminu Tambuwal (APC), Abubakar 
Atiku, former Vice President (APC), and Kano State governor Rabiu 
Kwankwaso. <br />

During the 24 hours, 13,700 people voted. 10,280 of those surveyed 
overwhelmingly voted for Buhari, giving him a 75% lead. This data 
mirrors a previous poll in which President Jonathan and Buhari were 
matched head-to-head, a pairing that suggested a win for Buhari with 78%
 of the vote cast.<br />

As in the previous poll, respondents came from all over the world.<br />

The previous poll prompted President Jonathan's aide on social media,

When the people of Mubi discovered that Nigerian Military with all their
 weapons can't help them, they had to take the laws into their hands in a
 bid to liberate themselves from Boko Haram slavery.<br />

Reports coming from the troubled North East Nigeria is that local 
militia in Adamawa State have driven the dreaded Boko Haram militants 
out of Mubi, a key town in the northeast state, nearly two weeks after 
the town fell to the terrorists.<br />
<br />
The Adamawa State governor and residents on Thursday confirmed this latest development.<br />

“Some of them (Boko Haram) ran away through Askira Uba and others 
through Mubi South and the situation in Mubi now is quite different from
 what it used to be.”</blockquote>

A spokesperson to Governor Bala Ngilari told Premium Times that Mubi is 
now quite different from what it used to be. He said local vigilante, 
popularly called Civilian JTF, launched a daring night time attack on 
Boko Haram terrorist in Mubi and drove them out.<br />

The government added that the operation by the vigilante received some support from the military.<br />
<br />
While a military source has said that the operation was not as 
“conclusive as claimed”, the Adamawa State government said the operation
 was successful and that Mubi is now free of Boko Haram.<br />
<br />
“His Excellency, Governor Bala Ngilari, has confirmed that the combined 
efforts of the Civilian Vigilante and the Sarkin Bakan Gombi as well as 
the military has successfully chased away Boko Haram from Mubi town,” 
Phineas Elisha, the director, press, to Governor Ngilari, told PT.<br />
<br />
It would be recalled that Boko Haram captured Mubi Town on October 30 in
 a daytime raid after attacking the military installation there, chasing
 soldiers and residents out of town, and killing many.</div>

collecting their certificate which naturally should come free. He says a
 lot of them have been paying because they have no choice, but some are 
yet to pay due to lack of money and things shouldn’t be done this way, 
especially in a Christian school.  The major reason they gave according 
to him was that they didn't wait till the end of convocation and had to 
be punished. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The 
convocation ceremony of the Amethyst Graduating Class 2014 of Babcock 
University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria was held on June 1st, 2014
 at the school's stadium. It was 3 convocation ceremonies in one - first
 degree, masters and PhD.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A number of 
dignitaries were present and some of them were presented with honorary 
doctorate degrees. The program lingered on for over 5 hours during which
 many parents for whom inadequate provision had been made, had to stand 
through the program even while it rained, to watch their children 
convocate.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">However, 
certificates were only handed to first-class graduates (first degree) 
and the rest were to return to the school later on to get theirs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">  </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Due to the 
impatience of the parents who were drenched, agitated and tired of all 
the unnecessary speeches and protocol, a somewhat disorderly exit of the
 parents ensued. Who could blame them? Many of them had far distances to
 travel back. Of course, they started to call their children, who found 
ways to exit since in fact, their own ceremony was over.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Weeks later 
when the rest of the certificates were ready for collection, students 
were mandated to pay N25,000, an order said to have been from the 
Vice-Chancellor (supposedly because the procession that was to be done 
at the end of the ceremony was ruined causing some form of embarrassment
 to the school). The Registry used lists said to have been signed by the
 graduands that waited till the end of the program, to issue out the 
certificates. If your name wasn't on that list, you had to pay N25,000 
before getting your certificate. This is unfair on too many levels. The 
roll call should have been done at the beginning.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"> Normally, 
certificates are to be issued out to all the graduands during the 
convocation ceremony, as a matter of right actually, talk less of after 
paying such exorbitant rates as fees for quality education. There were 
over 1,500 students that convocated that day (excluding the first-class 
graduands). Do the math.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">They need to
 stop abusing Christianity and using the name of Jesus in vain. This 
isn't what Christianity or discipline is about. It is theft.</span><br />
