The annual festival of Lagos State Lagos Countdown kicked off in grand style as Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola kicked off the flag-off ceremony and performed the ‘switching-on’ of Festival of Light as the Bar Beach area of Lagos wears new look decorated with array of light.<o:p></o:p></div>

The festival which began skeletally since on the 7th of December will witness daily rounds of merriment and entertainment till December 31st. The daily offering will include Karaoke, DJ battle, Dance completion, all night dancing, singing competition and others.</div>

In his remark during the flag-off ceremony, Governor Fashola thanked Lagosians for supporting the vision for a Lagos Countdown. He also thanked sponsors for their support all through the previous editions. The Governor used the opportunity to appreciate the LASAA team for a job well done and encourage them to keep the good youthful spirit going. He enjoined all present and other Lagosians to ensure they pick up their voters card and vote en-masse for the APC flag bearer for Lagos State Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.<o:p></o:p></div>

 A suspected abductor, Mathew Alhaji, has been apprehended by 
policemen attached to Warewa Police Station, Ogun State, for abducting 
his friend’s daughter (name withheld).<br /> </div>

Our correspondent gathered
 that Alhaji and Mr. Agbotome Denis, who adopted the victim, had been 
friends for two years.Punch Metro learnt that the suspect abducted the 
13-year-year-old girl, around the Arepo area of the state on Sunday, 
December 14 while she was hawking fura.<br />

Our correspondent also learnt that the victim and her sister, Taiye, 
had left home around 9am on the fateful day, but the latter came back at
 1pm.Her parents said they became confused when she did not return home 
at about 4pm.<br />

 Metro, however, learnt that the victim had almost sold all the wraps of
 her goods when Alhaji offered to give her a ride home in his car.<br /><br />The
 suspect, who was said to be in his 30s, reportedly threatened to kill 
her when she raised the alarm that the car was not heading for her 
residence on Isijola Avenue, OPIC Estate.<br /><br />However, Alhaji was said to have freed the victim last Sunday, seven days after she was locked up in a room.<br /><br />It was learnt that the suspect was eventually arrested on the same day after the family reported the incident at the station.<br /><br />Speaking with our correspondent, the victim said her abductor left her in isolation all day although he did not touch her.<br />

<b>She said “Two wraps of fura were left in my tray when Alhaji
 saw me and offered to take me home. They were three inside that car, 
but I do not know other two. I told him not to bother that I wanted to 
collect money from some customers along the way home, but he insisted 
and promised to stop by for me to do so.“As we moved on, I complained 
that that was not the route to my house. He shut me up and vowed to kill
 me if I shouted. He threw my tray away and took me to a room.<br />“He 
would place food before me and lock me up in the morning until he came 
back in the evening. He did not do anything to me. When he eventually 
released me, I was unable to locate home. It was my mother’s friend that
 saw me wandering around and took me home.”</b></blockquote>
 Denis, a national of Benin Republic, said he could not fathom the rationale behind his friend’s action.<br />

“He always comes to our house and all my children know him 
as my friend. There is no misunderstanding between us and I do not know 
why he did that,” he said.</blockquote>

In this season of goodwill, I urge all patriotic Nigerians to rededicate themselves to doing all within their powers to support the brave men and women of our armed forces in the ongoing war against terrorism, and also support the Federal Government’s efforts to provide more succour to the hapless victims of terrorist atrocities.<o:p></o:p></div>

The Victims’ Support Fund which we have established to raise additional funds to assist our compatriots who have been adversely affected by continuing insecurity in parts of our country remains active.<o:p></o:p></div>

I call on all individuals and corporate organisations who have not yet done so, to donate more generously to the Fund which is being efficaciously deployed to ease the sufferings of victims of terrorist violence in the country.<o:p></o:p></div>

Dear Compatriots, we are also celebrating this Christmas against the background of preparations for next year’s general elections.<o:p></o:p></div>

I seize this opportunity to reassure the nation that my administration will give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) all necessary support to ensure that it delivers very free, fair, credible and acceptable elections in 2015.<o:p></o:p></div>

National security agencies will also be given all necessary support to enhance their ability to ensure that the elections which should strengthen democracy in our country are peaceful and violence free.<o:p></o:p></div>

I urge our political class to be law- abiding and place the greater interests of our nation above all personal or sectional interests in the countdown to the elections.<o:p></o:p></div>
