This is one death too many. Why are Nigerians being killed with impunity in Dubai?<br />
Tragedy struck the former governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye 
Alamieyeseigha, on Sunday, when one of his sons, Oyamiefa, was murdered 
in Dubai where he was a student.<br />
<br />
The 30yrs old late Oyamiefa, who was reportedly killed in the house 
belonging to his father in the Arab country, was said to be the only 
person living in the luxury apartment. The deceased was the last but one
 of the former governor’s children.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that he was murdered by unknown gunmen who stormed his 
apartment on Sunday night. Some impeccable family sources disclosed that
 his lifeless body was recovered by neighbours.<br />

It was gathered that the former governor was informed about the tragic 
development early Monday morning and he promptly departed for Dubai. </blockquote>

Alamieyeseigha was in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, preparing for 
his investiture as patron of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations 
(NIPR) on Thursday to launder his image for 2015 before the tragic 
occurrence forced him to abandon the event.</blockquote>

The event had been packaged to launder the image of the former governor 
after he received state pardon from President Goodluck Jonathan 
following his conviction for corruption during the Olusegun Obasanjo 
administration. Prior to his conviction, he had staged a dramatic escape
 from the UK where he was under house arrest and undergoing 
investigation for fraud.<br />

Alamieyeseigha’s son’s death is the latest in the long list Nigerian students killed abroad.<br />

<b>My Son Didn’t Commit Suicide; He was Killed – Alamieyeseigha</b><br />
The former Bayelsa governor has debunked the claim by Dubai police that his son committed suicide.<br />
<br />
LEADERSHIP gathered that Oyemifa’s body had been found in a street by 
the police who searched him and found his identify card. Using the 
identification card, the police were said to have traced his home only 
to discover that he came from “a big family”.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that shortly after ascertaining the background of the 
deceased, the policemen left but later came back to tell his family 
members in Dubai that Oyemifa had committed suicide.<br />
<br />
The policemen were said to have based their claims on an autopsy they said was conducted on the body.<br />
<br />
Alameiseigha, who was said to have taken the incident heavily, was said 
to have rejected the policemen’s claims. When contacted through a text 
message by our correspondent, the aggrieved former governor said: “He 
was killed in Dubai.”

Governor Rotimi Amaechi has described the APC presidential hopeful, 
General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), as a detribalised Nigerian nationalist.<br />
<br />
The governor, who is the chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum, spoke 
during the visit of Buhari to the state to urge the people and the 
South-South region, to vote him in the February 14, 2015 presidential 
election, should he be picked by his party as its flag bearer.<br />

In the words of Amaechi: “Those who describe you as a religious bigot do
 not know you. Frankly, I used to think that way when I was in the 
Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, but all that changed when I joined the 
APC and have the opportunity to relate with you very closely as a

There is good news for diabetic patients. They will no longer need to 
inject insulin – thanks to a treatment involving the use of 
insulin-producing cells which Harvard University scientists discovered 
how to make.<br />
<br />
The cure could, therefore, be imminent as the scientists have produced 
large volumes of laboratory-grown pancreatic cells required for one-off 
transplantation in patients.<br />
<br />
The breakthrough has been hailed and compared to the invention of 
antibiotics. It involved identifying how to efficiently turn both stem 
cell types into beta cells.<br />
<br />
The cells, millions of which were manufactured, produced insulin, 
responded to glucose, worked on mice for many months and will soon be 
used to treat humans.<br />

<span style="color: #cc0000;">The discovery is the result of 23 years of research by Harvard Professor Doug Melton</span>,
 whose study of type 1 diabetes was prompted by his son having the 
condition as a six-month-old. His daughter received the same diagnoses. </blockquote>

The cells could be used to treat all patients rather than each person needing their own genetically matched treatment.</blockquote>

The cells tested on mice were placed in a porous capsule to protect them
 from attacks by the body’s immune system, while allowing the insulin to
 diffuse out.<br />

This means the cells could be produced on an industrial scale and used 
on patients without possible immune rejection, while the capsule could 
be replaced if it stopped working.<br />
<br />
A report on the work is published in the October 10 edition of the journal Cell. Online reports quoted Prof Melton as saying: “<span style="color: #cc0000;">It was gratifying to know that we could do something that we always thought was possible, but many people felt it wouldn’t work</span>. We are now just one pre-clinical step away from the finish line.”<br />
<br />
The Telegraph quoted Professor of Regenerative Medicine, University 
College London Chris Mason as saying the discovery was “potentially a 
major medical breakthrough”.<br />
<br />
“If this scalable technology is proven to work in both the clinic and in
 the manufacturing facility, the impact on the treatment of diabetes 
will be a medical game-changer on a par with antibiotics and bacterial 
infections,” he said.<br />
<br />
Head of Institute of Integrative Biology at the University of Liverpool,
 Prof Anthony Hollander, added: “This is very exciting fundamental 
research that solves a major roadblock in the development of a stem cell
 treatment for diabetes.<br />
<br />
“The study provides a very elegant and convincing method for generating functional insulin-producing cells in large numbers.”<br />
<br />
Prof Mark Dunne of Manchester University said: “Overall this is an 
important advance for the field of diabetes and people with Type 1 
diabetes.”<br />

 a tiny village in Hunan province, central China a man dressed in a 
white vest and shorts rides around the dusty streets on a rusty bicycle,

 stop him and ask what he's up to. "I'm collecting hair," he says. "When
 I ring my bell women come out and I cut their hair. I make hair 
extensions." </i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">I ask him how much he pays women for their hair. "I offer them a good price, but I need to make a profit," he says with a smile.</i><br />

 streets of the village are covered in hair drying beneath the scorching
 sun. Some of the hair is definitely human hair, yet the number of 
shaven goats wandering the streets suggests otherwise.</i><br />

some of it definitely is not. He then sells it to larger factories where
 it is treated with chemicals before being sold to shops around the

 left Hunan wanting to see where the hair went next. So I visited the 
megacity of Guangzhou. The city - formerly known as Canton - has always 
been one of China's most important trading hubs and wealthiest cities.</i><br />

<i>Massive hotels and office blocks dominate the skyline close to the 
vast and murky brown Pearl River. The tops of the skyscrapers are hidden

 the smog is where I met Lily. She owns a shop selling wigs and hair 
extensions in Guangzhou's enormous beauty exchange centre in an area 
known as Sanyuanli. </i><br />

 you can buy anything from nail polish and night cream to foot spas and 
foundation. The lower floor of the market however is dedicated to hair -
 terrifying mannequins sport wigs and weaves of every colour the rainbow
 has to offer.</i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">Lily
 sits on a stool in her shop, bunching the recently delivered hair 
together into fringes, curls and metre-long straight extensions. </i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">The
 hair is held together with labels which supposedly tell us their 
country of origin. Here, apparently, one can buy hair from Peru, India 
and Brazil.</i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">There
 are no Chinese customers here though - every buyer seems to be from 
Africa. Nigerians, Ghanaians, Congolese, South Africans, Angolans and 
Ugandans scour the impressive hall for the best-priced hair extensions 
available. They tell me they can triple their money when they get home. </i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">Towards
 the end of a busy day I ask shop owner Lily how her business is doing. 
"It's ok, we used to sell to Europe and America, but now nearly 100% of 
my clients are in Africa," she says.</i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">Lily
 shows me a list of the nationalities of the traders she sells to - of 
the 39 countries on the list, 37 are in Africa, reflecting the large 
African community in this city. </i><br />

 then describes, how in order to make her business profitable, she has 
to use fake scales when weighing out hair to customers and buy a mixture
 of human hair and synthetic or goat hair to lower costs. </i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">"We
 say it is Indian hair or Brazilian hair, but in fact it is normally 
Chinese hair or even goat hair. They never realise. This is the only way
 we can keep things cheap," she says, adding that her customers always 
drive a hard bargain.</i><br />

 we can finish our conversation Marie from Uganda comes in, demanding: 
"I want Brazilian hair, only Brazilian, give me your best quality and 
best price."</i><br />

 negotiation goes on for hours under the watchful eyes of the 
wig-wearing, angry-looking mannequins. As the sun sinks and the moon 
begins to rise over Guangzhou's polluted skyline, Marie leaves 
empty-handed. </i><br />
<i style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; line-height: 18.2000007629395px;">I
 run after her as she leaves the shop to ask if she knows that some of 
the hair isn't human. "Of course I know. The Chinese think we're stupid.
 I come all the way from Uganda and they think I don't know hair," she 
says.</i><br />

 pauses and then lets out a huge, hearty laugh before coming close to 
whisper in my ear: "I laugh a lot when I go home and I know that the
