The President, Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria (CRCN), Mallam Shehu 
Sani, has said that 70 percent of the problems bedeviling the North are 
caused by ex-presidents and leaders of northern extraction.<br />

The remaining 30 per cent, Sani said, should be attributed to President 
Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for what he called his sectional 
leadership and neglect of the North.<br />
<br />
The CRCN boss described as a “waste” the number of years ex-heads of 
state and presidents of northern extraction had piloted the affairs of 
Nigeria. He argued that they had not only failed to empower the region 
but ruined it educationally, socially as well as economically.<br />

Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Shehu Shagari, Generals Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim

late Umaru Yar’Adua, all from the region only left behind trails of 
poverty, discords among the people of diverse faiths and ethnicity 
rather than development.<br />

Sani, who is aspiring for the seat of the Kaduna Central Senatorial 
District on the platform of APC, argued that President Jonathan only 
compounded the woes of the region while past leaders of the North simply
 left a region whose future was in doubt.<br />

The activist said this while addressing sacked and unpaid workers of 
textile industries in the North who had gathered on the premises of the 
Kaduna Textile Limited, in Kaduna State on Saturday.<br />

He added that the President only empowered the people of the South-South to the detriment of others.<br />

He said, “70 per cent of the North is destroyed by northern leaders and 
30 per cent is being destroyed by Jonathan. We must take the blame and 
must tell ourselves the truth. Northern leaders had the opportunity to 
industrialise, to educate and to uplift the social standard of the 
region but they left behind a trail of poverty, of discord among people 
of diverse faiths and ethnic affinities.<br />

“They left behind a region backward educationally and industrially. They
 left behind a region whose future is in doubt. For over three decades 
when northerners were in power they used the opportunity to empower 
traditional rulers and some religious leaders as well as making the 
rich, richer and pauperised the common man.<br />
<br />
“They were not able to do what Jonathan is doing by empowering the young
 and the Niger Delta militants who are being enriched today. It was a 
wasted opportunity which I believe should serve as a lesson next time 
when power is back to the region.”</div>

As the contest for the ticket of All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead 
of the 2015 presidential election gathers momentum, the South-west zone 
has emerged the “beautiful bride” who the aspirants must court if they 
must secure the ticket of the party to contest the poll, THISDAY report.<br />
<br />
It was gathered from party sources that the emergence of the South-west 
zone as the beautiful bride stems from two reasons, the first being the 
immense influence a National Leader of the APC and former Lagos State 
Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, still has on the zone.<br />
<br />
The second arises from the fact that the zone will not be producing the 
presidential candidate of the APC for the 2015 elections, but still 
commands the highest number of states controlled by the party and would 
therefore be expected to produce a substantial number of delegates who 
will determine the outcome of the presidential primary scheduled for 
December 2, 2014.<br />
<br />
Accordingly, the major contenders for the presidential ticket of the 
party comprising former military Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu 
Buhari; former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; and Kano State Governor, 
Rabiu Kwankwaso, have been lobbying the South-west governors ferociously
 to get their support.<br />

It is important that the three major presidential contenders enlist the 
support of the five South-west governors, as they in turn would be 
expected to tow whatever line determined by Tinubu, their leader.<br />

He said: “As things stand today in the party, the South-west remains up 
for grabs for all the presidential contenders as the governors await the
 directive of the ‘oracle’.”<br />
<br />
The oracle refers to Tinubu, who is believed to have considerable influence on the South-west APC.<br />
<br />
Although initial bets were on Tinubu throwing his weight behind the 
candidature of Buhari owing to the pre-merger deal they reached early 
this year on the Muslim-Muslim ticket, the party source informed THISDAY
 yesterday that even Buhari was yet to receive any form of material 
support from Tinubu, while none of the governors in the South-west have 
been given instructions to line up behind the retired General.<br />

“Asiwaju is not talking about the presidential contest with anyone and 
so it is difficult to decipher his thinking on the issue. The party in 
the South-west is at a standstill because all the governors of the party
 are apprehensive about running into a collision with him on the 
matter,” the source said.</div>

Ekiti State is still in political mood. The All Progressives Congress 
has vowed not to allow strangers to take over the State. Its state 
Chairman, Jide Awe, said during the state Congress in Ado-Ekiti on 
Sunday, that the party had “men and women of honour who are going to be 
at the vanguard of this struggle” to upturn the emergence of Ayo Fayose 
of the PDP as the state governor-elect.<br />
<br />
Awe, who was returned as chairman, said, “This is our land. The land of 
the progressives, We won’t allow any stranger to take it from us. The 
struggle for emancipation of Ekiti State has just started. I know we 
have men and women of honour who are going to be at the vanguard of this
 struggle. We at the head of the struggle will not shack in our 
responsibility.”<br />
<br />
Governor Kayode Fayemi, represented by his deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu,
 said he was optimistic that the APC would “overtake and recover “ the 
state from the PDP.<br />
<br />
Fayemi said, “The APC is getting stronger. The party is on the ground, 
effectively, efficiently and absolutely. From what I have witnessed, we 
still have a firm grip of the state.”<br />
<br />
But Governor-Elect, Ayo Fayose, said the APC leaders are merely deceiving themselves...<br />

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, he said, 
“The APC leaders, especially, in Ekiti State are only deceiving 
themselves. If they think they are progressives, they are not because 
they are pretenders. They are wolves in sheep skin. PDP has won in Ekiti
 State; so, the APC should forget it.<br />
<br />
“I want the Ekiti APC to know that by 2015, APC will exist only in name,
 especially in this state. It will have no structure because its members
 would have defected to the PDP.<br />
<br />
“<span style="color: #cc0000;">We are going to do this with landmark projects. Laudable programmes to be embarked upon by Fayose would make them to defect</span>.
 For them to be saying they will recover Ekiti is just an imagination. 
They are daydreaming; it will never come to reality. For the next 50 
years, APC will not come back to Ekiti State.”<br />

Also, the state PDP Publicity Secretary, Kola Oluwawole, said it was 
wrong for progressives that make up the PDP in the state to be referred 
to as strangers. He said, “We don’t have any trouble with the tribunal 
because the election was free and fair. What we are complaining against 
is the procedure adopted by the judge in the case by the Ekiti 11.<br />
<br />
“On the contrary, we (PDP) are the progressives. APC members in the 
state are not progressives; they are retrogressives. If they are 
progressives, they will know how to accept defeat.”</div>

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said that terrorism and kidnapping
 were still major national challenges because Nigerians had not united 
against them as they did against the Ebola Virus.<br />
<br />
Jonathan made the statement at an inter-denominational church service at
 the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to mark the country’s 54th 
Independence Anniversary coming up on Wednesday:<br />

“Take the case of Ebola for example; this is a good example all 
Nigerians must learn from. When Patrick Sawyer brought Ebola to Nigeria,
 it was in Lagos that this incidence happened and in terms of politics, 
Lagos is an opposition party state but the central government is the 
ruling party. </blockquote>

“From Lagos Ebola moved to Rivers State, also opposition party state. </blockquote>

“But because all Nigerians fought Ebola irrespective of political 
persuasion, irrespective of religion, irrespective of ethnicity, as 
individuals we defeated the disease."</blockquote>

The president frowned at inflammatory utterances by politicians, saying:<br />

By now, the Nigerian military should be picking up a few useful insights
 into guerrilla warfare, which is going to be the preferred face of 
armed confrontation in the foreseeable future. During the conflict in 
the Niger Delta between the militants and the Nigerian Armed Forces, the
 militants used two names to issue public statements and threats: Jomo 
Gbomo and Cynthia Whyte.<br />
<br />
Gbomo has fallen mute since the 2011 Independence Day bombing in Abuja, 
when the leader of MEND, Henry Okah, was apprehended and put on trial in
 South Africa.<br />
<br />
It is Cynthia Whyte that is still talking any time MEND or those 
parading with the name issue a threat or claim responsibility for some 
mishap in the Niger Delta to prove they are still active even after five
 years of the Amnesty programme.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Boko Haram under its founder, Mohammed Yusuf, was not more than its 
predecessor jihadist anarchists led by Maitatsine and “Musa Makaniki” in
 Maiduguri and Jimeta, respectively in the 1980s. But when he was 
captured and killed and the original Abubakar Shekau emerged, Boko Haram
 assumed the toga of a full guerrilla outfit, feeding off sumptuous 
funding, floating arsenal of the deposed Muammar Gadhafi armoury and 
internal sabotage in the military and government by Boko Haram acolytes.</blockquote>

When the military announced it had killed the original Shekau, Boko 
Haram mimicked the Niger Delta militants and brought out another bearded
 figure, which it said, was Shekau, to portray that the military was

Unfortunately, most Nigerians chose to believe Boko Haram rather than 
the army fighting to protect them. Even the media stopped putting 
punctuation marks after the name of this upstart impostor. The military 
did not help matters because during the reign of Shekau II, a number of 
events took place to deflate the confidence Nigerians had in them. The 
Chibok girls were abducted in the most bizarre manner, with the 
insurgents making the Borno State and Federal Governments look like 
common idiots. Boko Haram struck and overran some military and security 
facilities, killing officers and seizing arms and logistics.<br />
<br />
Mutinies took place and soldiers shot at their commanding officers, 
which led to a court martial. The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Aliyu 
Gusau, threatened to resign over quarrels with Service Chiefs, and 
Nigerian troops sent to the war front often fled in the face of Boko 
Haram assaults.<br />
<br />
In the streets, we fought one another on political party or 
ethno-sectional basis. All these reinforced Boko Haram under Shekau II 
and emboldened them to storm out of their hiding places in Sambisa 
Forest and start seizing territories to plant their comical “Islamic 
Caliphate” pennants.<br />
<br />
The Nigerian Army must have realised that guerrilla warfare is more 
about brains than brawn. It is a mind game. Boko Haram under Shekau II 
fought us with deft application of mind game, and surged forward. It 
also took a commonsensical use of wits to snare Shekau II to his end.<br />
<br />
Our soldiers captured some Boko Haram fighters in the battle of Konduga.
 They forced them to stage a false victory celebration and invite Shekau
 II to come and officiate. They laid an ambush and wasted the bastard. 
The tide of public opinion has now changed. Nigerians now believe the 
Army more on the death of Shekau II. Boko Haram fighters have lost their
 nerve and are surrendering.<br />
<br />
We must keep chasing them right to the gates of hell, as US Vice 
President, Joe Biden would put it. The war has just gone into a new 
phase. It may not end tomorrow. Guerrilla wars never end that easily. 
Unless we press our advantage, Shekau III is likely to emerge. Boko 
Haram is already using their media acolyte, Ahmad Salkida; to deceive 
the public by saying Shekau is “alive, hale and hearty”. This simply 
means, “get ready for Shekau III”.<br />
<br />
The killing of the two Shekaus is like cutting off a hydra’s head: it 
will simply grow another unless you stamp it out conclusively. This we 
must do, by standing together with our armed forces.<br />
